Party At The Palace

12:40 PM, Sunday 3/3/02 Add |   |

Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her 50 years on the throne this year and is throwing a set of parties at Buckingham Palace unlike any other the Palace has ever seen. Paul McCartney, Elton John, Aretha Franklin and Eric Clapton are some of the artists who will be performing during the June 3rd pop/rock celebration.

Other performers include former Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Atomic Kitten, S Club 7, Phil Collins, Tom Jones and recent Pop Idol winner Will Young. Beatles producer Sir George Martin will serve as the creative director.

"The artists represent the greatest composers and performers of their generation and come not only from this country, but our sister nations in the English-speaking world," Martin said. "Thousands will relish the chance to see them perform together live on stage at Buckingham Palace."

Each artist will perform songs made famous by other musicians.

The other concert takes place June 1 and is called Prom At The Palace. The classical event features a rare performance by the Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich along with performances by soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and baritone Sir Thomas Allen, among others.

So, how much will one expect to pay for this posh event, you ask? Nothing, except the cost of a phone call. Anyone can apply for an invitation by telephoning the hotline. Calls will cost no more than £1 (approx. $1.50) with all proceeds going to The Queen's Golden Jubilee Charity. Lines will be open until March 17.

To ensure that everyone from around the country has an equal chance of attending, invitations will be allocated according to the broad spread of population across Great Britain. Everyone can apply for two tickets to each concert. Successful applicants - with a total number of 12,000 - will be chosen by ballot and notified by April 19 if they won.

Along with enjoying the day's entertainment, guests will be able to dine on a champagne picnic in the Palace gardens.
