Eastern Bloc Indie Rock

12:39 AM, Thursday 5/18/06 Add |   |

Genre-melding Denver group DeVotchKa has plans to follow its current European tour with concerts across the U.S. and Canada.

The band, which blends punk and folk roots with influences from Eastern Europe, South America, and the Southwestern U.S., has dates booked in Boulder, Colo., and San Francisco in late May, following gigs in France, Spain and the U.K.

They'll hit the road in earnest starting June 13 in Kansas City, Mo., covering the South, East Coast and Great Lakes region through the end of the month. They'll wrap in Minneapolis July 1.

DeVotchKa released a new EP, Curse Your Little Heart, on Ace Fu this month. The group also recently scored a film, "Little Miss Sunshine," which stars Steve Carrell and will hit theatres July 26.

Band members Nick Urata, Tom Hagerman, Jeannie Schroeder and Shawn King create their self-described "Eastern bloc indie rock" with a variety of instruments, including violin, accordion, acoustic bass, sousaphone, theremin, piano, drums and guitar.

Last year, in addition to several headlining jaunts, the group toured with Dresden Dolls, M. Ward, and Crooked Fingers.
