Rolling Stone 's Not Done Rating Rock!

02:41 PM, Tuesday 11/11/08 Add |   |

What do you get when Rolling Stone lists the best singers of the rock era? What else but one weird list?

Rolling Stone recruited James Hetfield, David Crosby, Yusuf Islam, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, James Blunt and others to submit 20 choices for the greatest rock era singer and an accounting firm tabulated the results, according to Reuters.

Of course, those aren't the only people Rolling Stone asked. There are, as usual, editors, producers and "music-industry insiders" taking up a chunk of the 179 voters.

Coming in at No. 1 is Aretha Franklin followed by Ray Charles at No. 2, Elvis Presley third and Sam Cooke fourth. Rounding out the Top 5 is John Lennon.

Bob Dylan, coming in at No. 7, topped Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and James Brown, who rounded out the Top 10. Paul McCartney comes in at No. 11, one place above his idol Little Richard.

Robert Plant comes in at No. 15, but he bested Mick Jagger, who bested Tina Turner. Michael Jackson is No. 25. Did we mention Bob Dylan came in at No. 7?

Rolling Stone and its 100-strong list is expected to hit newsstands Friday.
