Hail To The Chief

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a big blow-out party (well, parties actually) being planned in the nation’s capitol this month and celebs like Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Miley Cyrus and Aretha Franklin are lining up to provide musical entertainment.

First up is nonprofit youth voter group Declare Yourself’s inauguration kick-off event, which will take place Jan. 18 at Washington, D.C.’s Renaissance Hotel. The star-studded evening, hosted by Jessica Alba, includes a performance by Maroon 5, DJ sets by Samantha Ronson and surprise guests.

And while no official word has come down yet, the Washington Post’s Lena Sun reports that The Boss will hit the National Mall to play a free show for President-elect Obama’s inauguration week welcome event on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that same day.

Next comes Jay-Z’s “In Concert on the Eve of Change,” scheduled for Jan. 19 at the city’s Warner Theater and featuring the hip-hop mogul backed by a live band.

Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus will lead the entertainment for the official inaugural ball for kids the same evening.

And while Stevie Wonder and Barbra Streisand are rumored to be in talks for other official events, Franklin,Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma are to perform at the official swearing-in ceremony.

That’s a lot of star power in one city and it doesn’t even include unofficial shindigs like Dionne Warwick’s soiree with George Clinton and Chaka Khan, an Alicia Keys show, a free Kennedy Center gala thrown by Franklin and the Creative Coalition’s celeb-filled ball featuring sets by Sam Moore, Sting and Elvis Costello.

Right now the only change we can think about is how many outfits we’ll need to keep from showing up at more than one party in the same thing. Oh, the horror.

We Americans may be clueless as to how to manage a national economy, but we do know how to party. Maybe we need a Federal Dept. of Dancing and drinking. Hey, it couldn't hurt. More bread and circuses anyone?

Apparently we already have one. It's called the Department of the Interior.
