Sir Mix-a-Lot Likes Square Butts

Posted on Friday April 10, 2009 at 08:01 AM 2 |

What could be weirder than Burger King’s creepy King mascot? How about the King dancing to Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” – only with new lyrics promoting BK’s SpongeBob SquarePants Happy Meal?

The commercial aired during Monday night’s basketball game. Sample lyric: “When a sponge walks in, four corners in his pants, like he got phone book implants, the crowd shouts. All the ladies stare, dang those pants are square.”

Viewers are told that if they buy an adult value meal, they can pick up a BK kids meal with a toy for only 99 cents.

Sir Mix-A-Lot makes a cameo at the end of the ad and says, “Booty is booty.”

That’s right, he likes square butts and he cannot lie.

The rapper initially caused controversy with the 1992 “Baby Got Back” as the tune’s lyrics were criticized for being sexist. MTV labeled the song too sexual for prime time and only played it late night. The song was still very popular and won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

The Burger King commercial is stirring up some controversy of its own for using the scandalous song along with a cartoon character to promote a kids' meal.

Usually I’m the first one to be offended as something that could be considered sexist or racist or whatever-ist but I really wasn’t that shocked by this commercial. I mean, Spongebob does wear pants that are indeed, square. His name says it all. Yeah, “Baby Got Back” is totally inappropriate for kids but I think this commercial is just too ridiculous to raise a fuss about. Maybe I’m wrong and I’m not all up in arms because the King has stolen my brain. Or maybe it's because I have a soft spot in my heart for BK because they offer a veggie burger on their menu.

Watch the commercial and leave a comment telling us what you think. Are you going to boycott Whopper and co? Or were you somewhat amused by the weirdness?

If you enjoyed the BK commercial, you have to check out Sir Mix-A-Lot’s ode to giant beverage cups in “My Big Cups.” The tune aired on an episode of the hilarious and totally wacky "Tom Goes to the Mayor” on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
