New Kids On The Hip-Hop Block

Next week’s Hotstar Asher Roth has announced he’s joining forces with one of the other fresh faces on the hip-hop scene, Universal label-mate Kid Cudi, for a cross-country barnstormer this summer.

Prior to his co-headliner with Cudi, Roth will drop in on a handful of festivals and radio shows, including the B96 Summer Bash at Toyota Park near Chicago (June 13) and Summerfest in Milwaukee (July 1).

The duo will kick off The Great Hangover Tour July 14 at Boston’s House of Blues and bounce around the U.S., hitting theatres, through early August.

Joining the duo for support on the outing are B.O.B, 88 Keys and Pac Div.

After the run, Roth will head to Europe for a pair of festival appearances and then head back to the States in September to open for Blink-182.

At first glance, Asher Roth might seem to have a lot in common with Eminem, who took the hip-hop world by storm with his 1999 major label debut, The Slim Shady LP. In fact, Roth is the only other white rapper to ever grace the cover of XXL magazine.

But where Eminem’s lyrics, although at times wickedly funny, often seem to come from a place of anger, Roth has taken a more non-aggressive, party-boy approach to his craft. Think Beastie Boys.

His debut release, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, has earned him massive buzz from the industry and fans alike and scored him a No. 1 spot on iTunes.

Kid Cudi, who is signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint, is quickly making a name for himself by pushing the hip-hop envelope with twisted vocals and tweaky electronic sounds on cuts like his hit “Day ‘N’ Nite,” which is as at home on the dance floor as it is on the street.
