Lingering With O’Riordan

Posted on Friday June 12, 2009 at 09:01 AM Add |

Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan talked with her hometown newspaper recently, and hinted the band may get back together.

O’Riordan, who has a solo album – No Baggage – coming out in August, told the Limerick Leader she met with band members last week and the group might do an album … sometime.

“Oh yeah, I would see it on the cards in the future,” O’Riordan told the Leader. “With this (solo album] being out I will probably do a tour and in the next year or two it would be a really nice thing to do. I think creatively we would have to write some amazing music and go where we haven’t gone before and make an album that is totally different to what we have done before.”

The Cranberries’ first album – Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? – was released in 1993 and sold five million copies in the U.S. The band continued to enjoy success from record sales and touring until 2003 when members decided to take a break.

O’Riordan told London’s Independent she was no longer interested in making music after the band went on hiatus.

“I just wanted to stay at home, do the laundry, take my children to school,” O’Riordan told the newspaper. “Just switch off and be a mother. I enjoyed living in Canada, where my husband comes from, because I was treated like any ordinary person. I became a volunteer at my children's school, I went into the classroom. It was very grounding. I got sick of being famous.”

O’Riordan also told the Independent that, at the height of the band’s fame, she had something resembling a nervous breakdown, brought on in part by “too much too young.”

“It was really bad, a bit like the film, ‘Jacob's Ladder,’” O’Riordan said. “I thought people were watching me all the time. Looking back, I went nuts for a while. I didn;t want to go out or leave my room and even when I was in the room, I'd see faces looking at me.”

O’Riordan’s new solo album is a follow-up to her 2007 release – Are You Listening?  While talking with the Independent the singer also hinted at a Cranberries reunion, but indicated that it wasn’t something that would happen in the near future.

“It's funny, we all got together a few weeks ago and we've all got kids and babies,” O’Riordan said. “To bring kids into the world, you need to be there for them. I'm really enjoying taking things at my own pace.”
