Aerosmith Breaks Out The Toys

09:48 AM, Monday 6/15/09 10 |   |

Two things you need to know about Aerosmith today. First off, Boston’s favorite rock ‘n’ roll bad boys are giving "Toys In The Attic" the start-to-finish treatment on this year’s tour, marking the first time the band has played its landmark album in its entirety. And the second thing? How Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford ended up with a head injury.

Let’s start with Toys.

Just about anybody who had an 8-track player in their car during the ‘70s had Toys In The Attic. With tracks like "Sweet Emotion," "Walk This Way," "Uncle Salty" and "Big Ten Inch Record," Aerosmith’s third album locked down the band’s position as one of the world’s premier rock acts.

Over 8 million copies of Toys have been sold over the years and in 2006 the album reached another milestone when astronaut pilot Mark E. Kelly took his copy into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.

Which is as good a transition as any for Brad Whitford’s head injury.

More than a few people were surprised on June 8 when the band’s publicist put out a short, one-paragraph press release stating Brad Whitford would sit out a part of this year’s tour while “he recuperates from recent surgery.”

Uh? Recent surgery? When asked, the publicist said there was no additional information.

Now it looks as if Whitford’s surgery was the result of a little collision between the guitarist’s noggin and his Ferrari.

According to Reuters, the 57-year-old Whitford banged his head while exiting the sports car – an accident that lead to him going under the blade for internal bleeding.

“It built up pressure and gave him this whoopin’ headache,” Aerosmith's Joe Perry told Reuters. “He’s not prone to getting migraines, so [he] knew something was wrong. He went right in, they did what they had to do, and now he’s getting better.”

Whitford is scheduled to rejoin the band on July 7 in Raleigh, N.C., at Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion. In the meantime, Bobby Schneck, who has played with Green Day and Weezer, is filling in for the ailing guitarist.

The “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Presents Aerosmith” tour, which started June 10 in St. Louis, will be joined by special guests ZZ Top starting June 21.

I love Aerosmith, but I think playing a majority of their songs from one album is a huge mistake.  I hope they reconsider and not neglect some of their other huge hits like Janie's Got A Gun, What It Takes, Dude Looks Like A Lady, and others.  This news makes me less excited about going to their show.

Mistake?  That's just nuts!  Behind Rocks and Get Your Wings, Toys is their strongest album.  I wouldn't want them to play more than 2 songs from any album put out after 1975, but any of the three above records are so classic that they SHOULD be played in their entirety.

Also, Toys clocks in at less than 38 minutes, so they'll still have plenty of time to play all those other songs you want to hear as well...

There are so many bands doing this entire album thing.  Killing Joke & The cult did the same exact thing.  I agree w/the one comment that they should do the best off the first 3 albums, especially "Rocks".  That album gives goose bumps every time I hear Sick as A Dog or Lick & A Promise

gawd i hate this whole album trend...i know Judas Priest is also doing it this year....i dont want to hear some obsure B side throaways.....ok, play 4 or 5 songs of a particular album if you want to celebrate it...but the whole freakin thing? geesh...on the 'glass is half full' side, ill be able to go to the rest room during the show when the lines are shorter!

TOYS in its entirety:      At least at the first two shows of the tour, the band left off the final song on the album.   "You See Me Crying" n-e-e-d-s to be there, not only to complete a great album and live up to the hype of publicity of playing an entire LP, but also because it is a great song, destined to give chills live.      (And don't listen to the reason that Steven Tyler doesn't want to risk hitting the notes...... He still signs "Draw The Line" which has to be a rough one on his vocal cords.)

I saw Aerosmith last Wednesday in St. Louis (or Maryland Heights) and I must say those guys totally rocked the house. I've been listening to them since I was in grade school (early 90s) and it was my first time seeing them perform in person. Toys In The Attic was an album I was introduced to when I was much young and I must say I am glad they performed the whole album. Except they did not sing the last track (which is also my least favorite, You See Me Crying). The whole thing worked out great as I found myself singing along to such songs as 'Uncle Salty' and 'No More, No More'.

Huh? They played Toys in the Attic in its entirety and you were upset? Are you sure you're a fan? I remember I saw Roger Waters do the complete Dark Side of the Moon a couple years ago. Still the best show I've ever seen. It seems like he's the one that has made this whole album thing popular. I don't mind bands doing it as long as it's considered a great album and not just a good one.

I'm sorry hvt9198, I a huge Aerosmith fan, have everything they've ever released and if they played the songs you suggested (minus BITS and BOBO), I'm be suicidal for sure..

The real music came from the 70s, I was born 17 years after Toys came out and it's still probably their best album for me.

I'm so stoked for the show!!

Last week the show was going fine until they played "Jaded", talk about an exodus to the restrooms.

What a bubblehead!  "Played a bunch of songs nobody knows?"  Sounds like it was a bunch of songs YOU didn't know.  Anyone who'd rather hear "Amazing" or "Cryin'" instead of "Toys..." needs their freakin' head examined.  I like their newer stuff o.k., but please don't say anything about them pulling out the stuff that made them who they are!  I hear they may do "Rocks" all the way through later in the tour.
