Costner To The Rescue

09:01 AM, Tuesday 8/4/09 Add |   |

Kevin Costner and his band Modern West were about to perform in Camrose, Alberta, Saturday when a thunder storm accompanied by a violent wind whipped through the area. Now the actor / musician wants to return to the scene of the storm.

The strong winds are thought to have caused the collapse of the Big Valley Jamboree main stage, which resulted in one person killed and dozens injured. However, a representative for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety said Monday it’s too early to determine what happened.

Costner and his band were on the stage when it collapsed. Although he wasn’t injured, two of his crewmembers were hurt.

Billy Currington wasn’t so lucky. The country performer was just wrapping up his set when the stage collapsed on top of him, causing a minor concussion. His bass player, Alex Stevens, was trapped under the debris for 30 minutes.

According to reports the sudden windstorm happened so fast there wasn’t enough time to warn the audience. Concertgoer Donna Moore, 35, was killed when a speaker fell on her. Two others suffered critical injuries while dozens were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Now Costner is pledging a return to Camrose to help those injured by the stage collapse.

“We are so sad about the loss of life and injury that occurred on a day that carried so much promise, but turned so wicked so quickly,” Costner said Monday. “We hope to return to Alberta in the future to help with the healing.”
