Friday Fun: Most Embarrassing Band Cameos

10:01 AM, Friday 8/14/09 10 |   |

There’s probably no more risky move in the history of cinema than a director or screenwriter plopping a favorite band into their movie somewhere.

Oh don’t get me wrong, there are times when it not only worked, it helped set the tone for the entire film, like The Ramones in “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School,” Bauhaus in “The Hunger” or Oingo Boingo in “Back to School.”

Then there are examples that are up for debate, like Jonathan Richman in "There's Something About Mary."

Other times, it’s so painful you can just imagine the band feverishly negotiating to get their appearance cut out of the DVD release so there’s no permanent record.

Examples of this include The Blasters in “Streets of Fire,” The B-52’s in “The Flintstones” and Sugar Ray in “Scooby Doo.”

And even though they weren’t in a single frame of the movie, it’s pretty much an accepted fact that “Xanadu” effectively destroyed ELO.

Finally, there’s the piece of cinema gold by which all other embarrassing musical moments must forever be measured: “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

So how about it? What are some of the other band cameos that will have to be answered for at that big music festival in the sky?

It is not out yet, but from what I saw.  Rush In 'I LOVE YOU MAN'  While Rush is playing the dudes in the audience  are NOT ACTING LIKE REAL RUSH FANS!  They are not even acting like MEN!  Enough said.

Good Charlotte in Not Another Teen Movie, I mean come on. I felt embarrassed for Joel Gallen. And Alex Greenwald in Donnie Darko, that wasn't really embarrassing it was more of a lol.

There was this one show that was on ABC that had Mick Jagger on it, which was rather bizaar. because I couldn't imagine Mick doing anyrthing on TV that didn't have anything to do w/the Stones. At any rate, it was pretty bad.  I don't even remember what the name of the show was.  Didn't stay on air long though.

The best band cameo by far, even though it was a terrible movie, was Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura Pet Detective.

Rat Race was a great comedy, screwball at the height of those cool kids doin screwball. It made Seth Green funny and Whoopi funny again and Cuba Gooding Jr. funny again and on top of all that ... Mr. Beans and Newman were worth watching. All of these people shoulda made a lame movie. They didn't. Then Smashmouth showed up at the end. I loved that movie. Then Smashmouth showed up. Smashmouth..........Smashmouth. :\
