Les Paul Remembered

Posted on Thursday August 20, 2009 at 05:01 PM Add |

As legendary guitarist and musical innovator Les Paul is laid to rest in his home state of Wisconsin, one of the labels that was home to his work offers fans some of his music for free.

A funeral service was held for Paul in New York City on Wednesday, but the guitarist will be buried at Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha with a private ceremony tomorrow, following a public tribute and viewing at Discovery World in Milwaukee from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST.

Although other members of Paul’s family are buried in the cemetery, his plot will be larger and set apart from them to allow fans to visit and pay their respects without disturbing the sanctity of surrounding graves.

Other tributes to the father of the solid body electric guitar and inventor of the multi-track recording process include a Friday screening at Discovery World of his final Wisconsin concert at Milwaukee’s Pabst Theater in 2008, the display of his guitar at New York City’s Iridium Jazz Club and the aforementioned free tracks from Immergent Records.

Beginning tomorrow at 12:01 a.m. and continuing through midnight on Sunday, Immergent will post five songs from 2008’s Les Paul and Friends – A Tribute to a Legend for fans to download.

The album features Paul playing alongside musicians like Joe Bonamassa, Slash, Richie Sambora, Joe Perry, Peter Frampton and Jeff Golub and joined by vocalists Joan Osborne, Edgar Winter, Mick Hucknall, Johnny Rzeznik, Lisa Fisher and many others.

Fans can also leave their own tributes to the guitarist, stream the entire album and listen to “The Les Paul Radio Program,” a tribute special which aired last year when the album was released.
