Flame On!

05:01 PM, Wednesday 9/16/09 2 |   |

With the release of their double-album Embryonic on the horizon, Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips are gearing up for a full-on onslaught to spread the word.

First up is an appearance tonight on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” to unveil the new album. Fans will also get the chance to listen to the 18-track follow up to 2006’s At War with the Mystics in its entirety beginning immediately after the show at ColbertNation.com.

Embryonic, the Lips’ 12th album, is due Oct. 13 and will be released in multiple configurations: a standard CD; a limited-edition deluxe package that includes a bonus audio DVD of the entire album and a hardcover book featuring 24 pages of full-color art, lyrics and band photos; and a vinyl version with a single gatefold jacket housing two colored LPs plus a CD version.

The Flaming Lips’ online store will make two additional configurations available to fans: a deluxe DTC package which comes as a digipack inside a custom “fur” box that includes two CDs, a bonus 96k 24 bit-super resolution audio DVD and exclusive album artwork lithographs. A super mega deluxe vinyl edition is also in the works, with details to be released later this year.

The band will mark the release day of Embyronic with an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.”

Also next month, The Flaming Lips will hold their third annual “March of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons” Halloween parade in their hometown of Oklahoma City. The Oct. 24 event is expected to include floats, decorated cars, walking groups and – of course – 999 plus one flaming skeletons.

Two different packages for the parade, priced at $20 and $40 are available at FlamingLips.com. If you’d like to participate in costume, the band has a few rules you need to be aware of:

1. You can wear your costume from previous years and participate in the
parade. If you choose this option, you can purchase just the T-shirt and
the torch for $20. All the same rules apply, you must be 18, and you can
only use the torch that we provide.

2. 2009 Death March branded skeleton costumes come in two sizes: Standard
and Large — this will be based on your T-shirt size choice. If you order a
Small or Medium shirt, you will get a Standard size costume, If you order a
Large or X-Large shirt you will get a Large size costume. Each bundle comes
with a torch and 2009 March of 1000 Skeletons event t-shirt. The shirts are
available in sizes Small through X-Large so choose your T-SHIRT size at
checkout.

3. You may only purchase two costumes. Every costume must be for a
person so we need a person's name and e-mail address attached to each
costume. You will receive an email from us if you order two so we can obtain
the other person in your party’s name.

4. Every skeleton will be carrying a torch with real fire. Anyone in
the parade must be 18. Anyone in the parade must sign a waiver.

5. You will be told at a later date when and where to be, so please enter
a valid name, email, mailing address, and phone number at checkout.

6. A person must have the ability to march in the parade for up to two
hours.

7. If you do not show up at the assigned time to pick up your outfit and
be in the parade, you forfeit your fee and will not receive a refund.

8. There are no refunds, but who cares, you will have a blast!

Finally, got plans for New Year’s Eve yet? The Lips are throwing a party at Oklahoma City’s Cox Center on Dec. 31. Tickets, priced at $10, $20 and $25, go on sale Sept. 19. Joining the band for the evening are Oklahoma brethren and labelmates Stardeath and White Dwarfs.

You can keep up on Coyne and company’s busy schedule at FlamingLips.com.

I listened to Embryonic last night. All I was missing was some blotter paper. It was a freaktastic sonic assault on the brain. I love these guys.
