Almost A Faces Reunion

03:01 PM, Thursday 9/24/09 5 |   |

An e-mail from U.K. ticket service Ticketline listing Faces as appearing at London’s Royal Albert Hall in October sure caught our attention. Yes it is the legendary band of yore. Well, almost.

According to Ticketline, Faces will “reform for one night only for Helping The Heart of Music” on Oct. 25.

“Helping The Heart of Music” is a benefit for the PRS for Music Members Benevolent Fund, a charity that helps musicians, composers and songwriters in need. The Oct. 25 fundraiser was previously announced as featuring Jan Akkerman, Melanie C, Paul Carrack, Kiki Dee, Chris Difford, Georgie Fame, Robin Gibb, Mark King, Mike Lindup, Martin Taylor, Bill Wyman, Mick Hucknall and “some very important guests.”

Now it looks as if those “very important guests” is actually a Faces reunion.

Of course, it’s not everybody from the band’s glory days. Bassist Ronnie Lane died from pneumonia in 1997. So fans already know he’s not showing up.

But the most notable living Faces vet that won’t be at the show is Rod Stewart. According to the BBC, the reunion features Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan with the previously announced Wyman subbing for the late, great Lane.

Speaking of Wyman, the former Rolling Stones bass player will have his hands full that night. In addition to Wyman’s appearance in the reconstituted Faces, his Rhythm Kings will serve as the event’s house band backing all of the night’s performers.

But is Faces without Stewart and Lane really, well, Faces? That’s why God created comment threads. Please add your thoughts to this very important matter to the thread below.

Well, after Ronnie Lane passed away his replacement was Tetsu Yamauchi and they continued touring and released the poorly recorded live album Coast to Coast: Overture and Beginners and a single "You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything." So I would say if it was Rod, Ronnie, Ian, Kenny and another bass player it could still be considered Faces but without Rod it is not Faces. It has to be the 4 remaining members or it isn't Faces.

Rod Stewart is nothing more than an inflated ego attached to a voice that makes me want to slit my wrists. They're better off without him.

It'd be great to have Rod be there if he was into it, but Ian is more than capable of handling all the vocal duties, especially on the Ronnie Lane songs.  I'm pissed at Rod for not making a as-complete-as-possible Faces reunion happen.

With Bill Wyman on base it will be the exact line up they had the last time they had a full reunion at the Brit Awards in the 90's (minus Roderick). Given Rod's surprise appearance at a Jeff Beck show recently and the pressure the res of the band are putting on him, I would say there is still a small chance he may decide to turn up. If not I will still get to see one of the best rock 'n' roll bands of all time play at one of the best venues in the world.
