Friday Fun: These Boots Are Made For Rockin’

09:01 AM, Friday 10/9/09 11 |   |

What’s your favorite concert bootleg? You know, those unauthorized concert recordings bought and sold at flea markets and traded among fans? Got a tasty sample of Van Halen from the band’s club days, a Springsteen recording from the 1970s, or a U2 tape from the ‘80s?

Concert boots come in all shapes and qualities. Some were recorded right off soundboards while others originated from concealed tape recorders carried into venues by fans. And, yes, some were recorded strictly for profit, and sold via back page classified ads in music magazines and regional fanzines.

Bands and artists have love-hate relationships with boots. Although some acts disdain unauthorized concert bootlegs, others even encourage illicit recordings. While The Grateful Dead might be the granddaddy of concert boots, other bands have encouraged their fans to record performances and trade them among their peers. Yes, we’re looking at you, Metallica. But we’re also looking at that Page / Plant tour from the ‘90s and The Black Crowes anytime, anyplace.

So, what’s your favorite boot? If possible, identify where the recording was made as well as the time period, then post your thoughts in the comment thread below.

The Neil Diamond videos are funny where you see his two security guys hunting down older women who are taking cell phone pictures.

There are a couple Chuck Berry ones out there too.

The audio tapes where in concert he fires the backing band.

The video tapes of Chuck showering a cracker with used beer.

Aerosmith has a boot called "Out of Control" from 1994, in Europe, man the sound is great, and they were just in a groove, I had a ton of boots and that one BLOWS all the others away!!!  THE BEST "Rats in the Cellar" recording EVER!!!  My next favorite is ALSO by Aerosmith called "House of Fire" recorded at Mama Kin's in Boston!!!

That's vintage 80's Van Halen  for sure - considering David Lee Roth repeats the first verse three times over in your clip...pretty typical for those days!

That's easy.  It's the Stones boot from 1973 that was recorded for a King Biscuit show that never aired for some reason.  It goes under various names including Brussels Affair and Headin' For an Overload.  But it is the single best concert recording I've ever heard.  Just one listen and you will know why the Rolling Stones were the best rock and roll band ever in their hey day.  And this was the best version of the Stones with Mick Taylor.  Pick it up right away if you can find it.

That show was so good, it was like overkill.  Even Robert Plant was in good form.  Definitely my favorite boot
