Brendan Mullen Dies

05:01 PM, Monday 10/12/09 1 |   |

Brendan Mullen, 60, known for giving early punk rock a West Coast haven at The Masque in Los Angeles, died of a massive stroke at Ventura County Medical Center Oct. 12.

Mullen showed no signs of heart trouble and a doctor told the Los Angeles Times, “Sometimes your number is just up.”

The founder of the late ’70s club brought in an endless supply of punk rockers, creating a West Coast foundation for the genre. Bands that called the Masque home included The Germs, Go-Go’s, X, The Dickies, The Plugz, The Weirdo, The Skulls and The Flesh Eaters. In lieu of flowers, Mullen’s family has requested donations to the Musicians Union or MusiCares.

RIP Mr. Mullen and Thank You for being a trailblazer.  You had the nuts & vision to open a club for a entire new genre despite the risks.  Thank you for our Left Coast CBGB.
