There’s A Reason It’s Called A ‘SmokeOut’

11:01 AM, Wednesday 10/14/09 1 |   |

There will be more than just music at the Cypress Hill SmokeOut.

Of course, Cypress Hill headlines the musical portion of the two-day event (Oct. 23-24) produced by Guerilla Union at San Bernardino’s San Manuel Amphitheatre and featuring performances by Slipknot, Deftones, Pennywise, Psycho Realm and Method Man & Redman, as well as reunion performances by reconstituted groups Sublime, Geto Boys and Goodie Mob.

But the event is called a “SmokeOut” for good reason. As in “SmokeOut Cannabis Cup and Medical Marijuana Expo,” which designates the “SmokeOut portion of the festival, and includes panel discussions, guest speakers and an “educational and interactive vendor village.”

What types of panels will be featured at this year’s SmokeOut? With titles like “Marijuana 101: The Higher Education of Pot,” “CelebStoners Speak Out For Cannabis” and “Free The Weed: Legalization Now!” no one should be confused as to what the SmokeOut is all about.

Plus, having Tommy Chong on a panel titled “SmokeOut Musicians Session” should eliminate any suspicions that the SmokeOut is just another music festival. What’s more, Cheech & Chong will host the SmokeOut’s second day of fun Saturday, Oct. 24, making it one of the more unique festivals of the year.

Among the cannabis luminaries appearing at this year’s SmokeOut will be former High Times editor and CelebStoner.com publisher Steve Bloom and magazine editor / TV commentator Shirley Halperin, who, co-wrote with Bloom the books "Pot Culture: The A-Z Guide To Stoner Language & Life,” and “Reefer Movie Madness: The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide.”

Director of public relations and patient advocacy for the Medical Cannabis Association, Dale Sky Clare will be there. Clare is also the executive chancellor of Oaksterdam University, which describes itself as “America’s First Cannabis College.” And we’ll bet you always thought that honor went to UC Berkeley.

Along with speakers and panel discussions, the SmokeOut has fired up a national contest where one lucky fan and guest will fly to the event and meet members of Cypress Hill and Deftones. Included in the prize are hotel accommodations, ground transportation, and two High Roller VIP tickets.

That’s today’s buzz on SmokeOut. For more information, please click here for the event’s Web site.
