Update –- Miley Cyrus’ Stalker Makes Plea Deal

Posted on Friday October 30, 2009 at 11:01 AM Add |

Miley Cyrus’ 53-year-old stalker/ wannabe-fiancé pleaded guilty Friday to resisting police who were trying to get him to leave the set of the teen star’s Georgia movie set. Stalking charges were dropped.

Mark McLeod of Appling, Ga., was arrested in June for disorderly conduct and obstruction of a police officer after trying to breach a security perimeter around the Tybee Island, Ga., movie set where the 16-year-old singer was filming “The Last Song.”

McLeod claimed Cyrus sent him secret messages through her Disney Channel “Hannah Montana” TV show and that he had sent her a diamond ring, which Cyrus had accepted as a sort or proposal by snail mail. McLeod was arrested Aug. 4 for criminal attempted stalking and has been jailed in Chatham County since then.

On Friday McLeod pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of obstruction of a police officer and disorderly conduct. Prosecutors had claimed McLeod tried to head butt an office trying to lead him away from the movie set. The misdemeanor charges of attempted stalking were dropped.

District Attorney Larry Chisolm issued a statement explaining the stalking charges were dropped because prosecutors lacked evidence that his "attempt to reach or follow Miley Cyrus was different than the hundreds of other fans."

Does Cyrus really have hundreds of stalkers?! Yikes. I hope she’s planning to give her bodyguards a fat Christmas bonus!

McLeod is going to get some help getting over his little infatuation. A State Court judge sentenced McLeod to two years of probation and ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation. He was ordered to stay away from Cyrus and her family in addition to being banished from Savannah and surrounding Chatham County.

Back in August McLeod’s computer was seized from his home by sheriff’s deputies. As part of his probation, McLeod won’t be able to use a computer.

On Wednesday the Chatham County grand jury declined to indict McLeod for a felony charge of obstruction of a police officer based on insufficient evidence from prosecutors.
