U2’s Berlin Wall

09:01 AM, Thursday 11/5/09 3 |   |

U2 finds itself involved in a rather ironic situation in Berlin. In conjunction with MTV the band plays a special mini concert tonight at the city’s Brandenburg Gate celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. But in honoring one wall’s demise, the band has had to put up another one, upsetting Berliners.

U2’s wall is a massive barrier meant to prevent people without tickets from seeing the show, a rather ironic predicament in itself considering it’s a free gig.

U2 distributed some 10,000 tickets for tonight’s freebie. Since it’s a free concert the no-charge tickets help limit the size of the audience.

Nevertheless, fans in Berlin not having free tickets for tonight’s free U2 show will find themselves on the wrong side of the wall.

At least this wall comes down after the show. Unlike its more infamous predecessor which stood for 28 years.

perhaps, they are going to take a page from pink floyd and knock it down as the show goes on, showing unity and blah blah blah. and im sure it being bono, it has something to do with the chidren (entourage joke)

CAN'T believe I just now saw this, I worked front of house tech for the Berlin show, MTV hosted the event and, thus, established the regulations for audience capacity- being a free event involving one of the worlds most well known acts, things could get out of control in the middle of a city.  It's not U2's ignorance that put up the ironic wall, it was MTV. You'd be suprises how little say a band (ANY band) has in concert legistics, thanks MTV for soiling a noble gesture.
