Live From NYPL – It’s The Velvet Underground!

09:01 AM, Wednesday 11/18/09 Add |   |

It’s not a concert, but members of one of the most influential rock bands in history – The Velvet Underground – are appearing at the New York Public Library Dec. 8 for an evening of conversation.

As part of the “Live From The NYPL” series, former members Lou Reed, Maureen “Mo” Tucker and Doug Yule are on the lineup for the event at the Library’s Celeste Bartos Forum that, so far, doesn’t include a conspicuously absent John Cale.

Taking their name from an early 1960s book about a secret sexual subculture, the Velvet Underground quickly attracted the attention of Andy Warhol who became their manager and suggested they work with German-born singer Nico on a few songs. The band’s debut 1967 debut album – The Velvet Underground & Nico – included VU classics “Heroin,” “Femme Fatale,” “I’m Waiting For The Man” and “Sunday Morning.”

Along with the library appearance, the band referred to as “The Beatles of New York” is also featured in the book “The Velvet Underground: New York Art” consisting of photos and other memorabilia showing the group’s history.

Tickets are $25 general admission and $15 for library donors. For more information, click here for the New York Public Library Web site.
