Must Be Bob Dylan

Posted on Wednesday November 18, 2009 at 12:01 PM 4 |

If you watch only one Christmas music video this year, make it Bob Dylan’s “Must Be Santa.”

Directed by Nash Edgerton, the song is from Dylan’s new seasonal album, Christmas In The Heart, and is marks the first time the Bard of Minnesota has appeared in one of his own videos since 1997’s “Not Dark Yet” from Time Out Of Mind.

As with everything Dylan, look closely and you might see a few surprises in this almost David Lynch-like world of Christmas revelers. But then, seeing Dylan in his own Christmas costume would add a surrealistic touch to any scenario.

All of Dylan’s royalties from sales of Christmas In The Heart will be donated to charity group Feeding America. Purchase the CD through the BobDylan.com store and you’ll also receive a bonus 7” 45 rpm single of “Must Be Santa” with Dylan narrating “Twas The Night Before Christmas” on the flip side.

Man, if Rolling Stone writes something everyone else in the biz takes it as the gospel truth, i guess...This is not Bob's first appearance in one of his videos since 1997...He was in the Things Have Changed video in 2000 and also in the Cross The Green Mountain video (with the same wig, i believe) in 2003...some fool at RS didn't do his homework, and I guess no one at any other media outlet has bothered to check the factuality of the claim before running with it, too...

    Love the video, though...

I think they mean that this is the first time he has appeared in a video promoting one of his own albums since TOOM. The videos for Things Have Changed and Cross The Green Mountain were promoting movies and not one of his own albums. This video is great and I wasn't going to buy CITH but I think I will now!

Dylan's rendition of this song is almost a carbon copy of the version done by Brave Combo, a polka/world music/rock band from Denton, Texas (outside of Dallas). Both renditions are wonderful!
