Star-Studded Who Tribute Planned

Organizers of the “Music of The Who” tribute announced a performance lineup featuring artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Bob Mould and Mose Allison as well as bands The Gaslight Anthem, Gov’t Mule, Living Colour and The Smithereens.

It was only two weeks ago when a reader wrote to us saying he spent some time with the Smithereens after a gig and the band’s Pat DiNizio told him about The Who tribute. Now, as Paul Harvey used to say, “now we know the rest of the story” about the concert scheduled for New York City’s Carnegie Hall March 2.
Promoter Michael Dorf, who has already presented tributes to Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, R.E.M. and Bob Dylan, has assembled a varied list of performers. In addition to the aforementioned acts, look for Matt Nathanson, Sondre Lerch, The Postelles and Robyn Hitchcock to honor the band.

“I grew up listening to the Who, and while the artists we’re brining together to honor them are incredibly diverse, they share a certain authenticity that has also defined music of The Who,” Dorf said. “This series has produced some unforgettable moments – including seeing Bruce Springsteen and R.E.M. make surprise appearances at their own tributes – and I expect The Who to be one of the most memorable shows yet.”
Will Roger Daltrey or Pete Townshend show up to be honored? At this time Daltrey is scheduled to appear with Eric Clapton in Tulsa, Okla., March 2. However, no tour plans have been announced for Townshend. Of course, anything can happen between now and March.

All proceeds from the show will go to six music education organizations – The American Symphony Orchestra Music Notes, Church Street School of Music, Young Audiences, Music Unites All-Youth Choir, The Pinwheel Project and FIKS (Fixing Instruments For Kids In Schools).
