Doherty Arrested Again

12:01 PM, Monday 12/21/09 1 |   |

If there ever is an award for pop singers acting like idiots, the honor should be named after Pete Doherty.

The Babyshambles frontman was arrested yet again Monday morning as he was leaving a Gloucester, England, courthouse after dodging a possible prison sentence for admitted drunk driving. The new charge? Drug possession.

Yes, that’s right. Doherty allegedly had drugs on him while appearing in court on a DWI matter. As to the drunk driving charge, Doherty was fined £2,050 ($3,293 U.S.)

Doherty was taken to the police station across the street from the courthouse and arrested on charges of drug possession. According to London’s Sun newspaper, a packet alleged to contain drugs fell out of Doherty’s pocket as the singer passed through courthouse security before he entered the courtroom.

According to the Sun, a witness described the packet as containing “little blue crystals.”

“The security man phoned the police and about six officers came over and waited to arrest Doherty when his case was over,” the witness said.

While in court Doherty copped to driving intoxicated, careless driving, two heroin possession charges and driving without insurance nor license.

Broken down, the judge fined Doherty £1,000 for drunk driving, £250 for careless driving, £200 each for the heroin possession charges and £400 for having no insurance. Evidently the Brits take auto insurance very seriously. Or, as in Doherty’s case, more seriously than heroin possession.

But then, maybe the British judicial system thinks there’s still hope Doherty will eventually learn to keep proof-of-insurance in his car. That is, if he doesn’t want to get into any real trouble.
