The Return Of The Plastic Ono Band

01:05 PM, Monday 1/11/10 7 |   |

It’s not every day you get a chance to see the Plastic Ono Band – the late ‘60s / early ‘70s supergroup founded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. But you can catch a slightly different lineup when a re-assembled Plastic Ono Band plays Brooklyn Feb. 16.

Launched in 1969 with the recording “Give Peace A Chance,” The Plastic Ono Band’s original lineup always seemed like a party with all of rock’s royalty invited. Along with Lennon and Ono, band membership back in the day included artists and musicians such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, bassist Klaus Voorman, Who drummer Keith Moon, saxophonist Bobby Keys and keyboardist Billy Preston. Record producer Phil Spector was also a member, as was drummer Alan White, who went on to replace Bill Bruford in Yes in 1972.

Now Ono has created a new lineup for the band, which is performing a special one-night-only show at the Gilman Opera House at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Feb. 16. Sure, some old Plastic Ono Band members will be there, including Clapton, Voorman and Jim Keltner, but the band has a few new members as well.

Like Sean Lennon, who wasn’t even a gleam in John & Yoko’s eyes during the band’s heyday. Also appearing as Plastic Ono members will be Bette Midler, Mark Ronson, Paul Simon, Martha Wainwright, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, Justin Bond, Yuka Honda, Haruomi Hosono, and Cornelius consisting of Keigo Oyamada, Naoki Schimizu and Yuku Araki.

2009 was a great year for Ono. Her new album – Between My Head And The Sky – was released in September and received great reviews from several music publications including Rolling Stone, NME and Spin.

Ono also received the prestigious Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award and the Mojo Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award. For more information on everything Yoko, please click here for the Plastic Ono Band Web site.

A sad day it was when a junkie loser like Yoko decided to stalk Lennon and screw him up royal.

To the contrary, Yoko gave up a great deal for John, in terms of her own career and existing as an artist on her own merit.  She could never be that again after becoming forever linked to John Lennon.  Also, she has fiercely protected his legacy for almost 30 years, without becoming sappy or commercial about it.  John was almost as iconic as Michael Jackson or Elvis, but his legacy has escaped the crass insipid nostalgia that has swallowed their legacies.

You maybe have to read some books on Lennon and The Beatles my friend.Plus look at lousy movies like Sgt. Peppers or that recent crap featuring all Beatles songs. If that is'nt insipid nostalgia thats tainted his legacy,I don't know what else could.Fact is,Julian Lennon gave an interview a few years ago saying Ono kicked John's sister or brother (I can't remember) out of a house he bought for them once she found out the house was in John's name.Once the media got wind of it she gave the home away to charity trying to make it look better.I won't even attempt to go into everything in print but she used to always go up and camp out and knock on their door making his wife Cynthia put up with her junkie game. She even wrote a contract with her junkie husband that if she bagged Lennon, he would get a certain chunk of money. These are just tidbits in books. She has a long list of offences.Course, its only in books and I have no firsthand proof yet I've never met any musicians who knew John who liked her.

Oh yea,how could I forget.Does anyone really like her art or horrible shreiking?! Do you like those couple horrible records they made featuring John's monotonous guitar feedback and her shreiking.Whole lps released mind you, virtually unlistenable from a really talented musician? That in itself and how she got Lennon into junk even while in the Beatles proves it was a sad day he met her.Not that it does'nt take two to tango but oh boy..

History shows she has profited, BIG TIME, post John's death; history also shows she has offered much to preserve his legacy.  Think what you want and you are probably right, however thanks to her love for John, fans have gotten unreleased music, video, photographs and an exhibit of his NY years.  That's all a very good thing.

nbarnett:  You make some excellent points.  I had not considered them.  She has "done right" by her husband.
