She's All That (Or She Could Be)

Posted on Monday January 11, 2010 at 06:01 PM 6 |

Most of the time, the stories that get posted to Pollstar.com over the weekend go largely unnoticed and slide slowly down our home page until they fall into archive oblivion. That is, of course, unless the story is about someone who’s really captured readers’ attention, like Miley Cyrus.

On Friday, the New York Post reported that Billy Ray’s most successful scion would be hanging up her wig after “Hannah Montana” finishes the season.

Disney Senior Vice President of Programming Adam Bonnett told the Post a March episode of the show is a special that’s “a big one-hour event where we find out what Miley Stewart’s decision is going to be. It’s one of the things she’s been wrestling with for months – whether it’s time to make a decision to continue being Hannah Montana or just be a regular, ordinary girl.”

Although the move has been expected for some time, the world just became a little bit dimmer place for millions of pre-teens and tweens. But we can all agree that the singer and actress deserves a chance to grow beyond the show that made her a star and move on to a long, happy career right?

Actually, not all of us wish smiley Miley well.

Wow. You guys are a tough crowd. What’s up with that? Was Miley saying mean things about you in homeroom again? Comments on the story were filled with the kind of hatred usually reserved around here for a certain ticketing company or that concert promoter that’s rumored to be building a real world version of “The Matrix.”

You are all aware that the singer and Disney Channel star is only 17 aren't you? So even though she’s been in the spotlight for several years now and she’s known by billions of people across the globe, her life is really just getting started. Was your future set in stone at 17? I'm guessing not.

Yes, "Hannah Montana" is beyond stupid. On an entertainment level, it’s somewhere between “The Patty Duke Show” and “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.” So what. It's a show written for tweens that airs ad nauseam on the Disney Channel. It's supposed to be stupid. I'll bet my next raise there's a show from your youth you revere that falls into the same category. (Mine's "Land of the Lost,” an absolutely ridiculous show with some of the worst acting ever seen on a television screen and even worse special effects. But it still holds a fond place in my memory.)

How about we all just take a deep breath and step back a little bit before we go on. There, I feel better already, how about you?

I don’t think it’s wise (and I’m certain it’s not fair) to be so quick to write Miley off. Plenty of people in the entertainment industry have pretty ignoble beginnings on their resumes.
Janet Jackson started out on the wildly uneven ’70s sitcom "Good Times," Fergie and Martika learned to do their thing on the earnest but ultimately lame "Kids Incorporated" and Alanis Morissette cut her teeth on the Canadian kids show and cult-favorite "You Can't Do That on Television." And that’s just the girls.

Critical golden boy George Clooney’s impressive acting credits include "The Facts of Life," "Golden Girls" and "Return of the Killer Tomatoes." And do I have to remind you that fan fave and multiple Academy Award nominee Johnny Depp sulked his way through "21 Jump Street” mostly on the strength of good hair and killer cheekbones?

The truth is, none of us - Miley included - can really know what she'll end up doing. Even though it's clear she has some skill as a singer/songwriter (“Party in the USA” wound up on an awful lot of surprising “Best Of” lists last month), music might not even be her final destiny.

Just think, she could end up an Academy Award winning actress. Stranger things have happened. After all, Helen Hunt started out shipwrecked with "The Swiss Family Robinson" and after playing a precocious teen on "Gidget," Sally Field had a "habit" of flying into trouble.

So whether your room is plastered with posters of Miley’s smiling face or you nearly crash your car every time one of her song’s comes on the radio, give her a break. You might just be pleasantly surprised by what you hear (or see) one of these days.

I don't have an opinion on Miley's acting because I don't follow her at all. I would not let my teenage kids follow her though either. Her little naked stunts have given us a preview into what type of role model she is turning into. I do have a major bone to pick with you over you dissing Johnny Depp in 21Jumpstreet. He was actually a very good actor, for not having any acting skills yet.He had not taken classes nor did he have anyone else famous in his family to follow. Not that those things make a good actor every time anyhow. I was an extra in 21 Jumpstreet several times in the few years that Johnny Depp was on and I witnessed some pretty good acting. Ever seen the episode where Tom Hansons girlfriend is shot and killed right in front of him? ( Second season episode: Orpheus 3.3) Check that one out before you diss JD.  He also had the brains to go with his gut and quit the spoon fed tv acting ,and look where he is now!  You need to do some research before you call yourself any kind of writer.JD is NOT an academy award winner. He was nominated for POTC,Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd. He for some insane reason has never won. He should have won for Sweeny Todd.

I think Miley has incredible talent, her songs are great, and that is coming from a BIG Aerosmith fan, her tunes are catchy, The Climb is a song that anyone can relate with.  She has a clean image, despite the comment from mel5 below, her naked stuff had her dad sitting just feet away from her.  Yes these teens do go the route of what my daughter and I call "the dark side" see Brittney Spears for example.  My hope is that her wonderful & inspiring music and smile will continue for many years.  She has nothing to prove to anyone.  KEEP ROCKIN' MILEY!!!

Miley Cyrus is definitely a talented kid, good voice and she has released some catchy stuff.  Like any person her age she has said or done some stupid, not meant to be malicious but unfortunately everything she does will be pulled apart to create buzz.  I don't think she or her mgmt really had the fans in mind with her recent tour.  We saw the show in Boston which was packed btw and I, myself wasn't that impressed with her overall demeanor.  Given that there was 16,000 people in the building who spent their hard earned money for a ticket the kid just never seemed happy to be there.  Pretty bad when your 8 year old picks up on the fact that she's not smiling at all.  I also thought the set-list was not a fair offering to the fans as I would imagine many didn't get to see her last tour because of the outrageous scalping that was happening.  I have been to hundreds of shows and am all for artists focusing on new material but also, recognizing some of the songs that put them there.  She played little to no HM material, a verse and a chorus of the song from the movie.  It would've been nothing for her to throw a couple of more tunes out or even a medley.  It would've been the professional and conscious thing to do.  I mean, she was playing covers during her set.  I think someone dropped the ball on that one.  But I forgot, she wants to be a serious artist so all is forgiven.

Here's a short list of acts who were also brushed off as just teen idol fads early in their careers: Elvis Presley; The Beatles; Frank Sinatra; Madonna; Prince; Justin Timberlake; Christina Aguilera; and many more. All of them went on to have extremely successful and highly critically acclaimed careers as they grew past the teen idol ages and became more mature in their work.

Am I saying that Miley Cyrus deserves to be in this kind of company? No, not yet, anyway. Nor am I saying she ever will. But I AM saying, let her career complete its course first (or at least let it go a few more years) before we the public decide where she belongs in the pantheon of artists. She's clearly not done yet, the public as a whole isn't done with her yet, and she still has potential; let's see if she lives up to it or not as she gets older. She could go on to have a long and sustainable career and do important work, as the above artists did after their teen idol days, or she could end up as the next Leif Garrett. It's still too early to judge.

None of the people you mention in this article were the STARS of the shows you mention.  As you said, they were "cutting their teeth" on these shows as bit players or semi-recurring cast members.  Comparing the center of the TOP-RATED (by # of viewers) cable show for 5 years to George Clooney's episode of Golden Girls is ridiculous.  And comparing her to Martika?  More people TIVO Hannah Montana every week than ever heard of Martika.

The biggest challenge Miley faces is moving into her adult career after having been THE BIGGEST teen star of the decade.  Like it or not, she was as big as Britney Spears, and she will have to face the fact that she will never be that big again.  Not that her best days are going to be behind her, but definitely her biggest fame will be.
