What About Next Year?

10:01 AM, Monday 2/8/10 28 |   |

The Who rocked the Super Bowl halftime show yesterday with a mini-set of the band’s hits. But what about next year? Which band or artist do you think is Super Bowl worthy?

Ever since Justin Timberlake ripped Janet Jackson’s costume and exposed the singer’s breast to the Super Bowl audience in 2004, the NFL has gone with acts of the classic rock variety. In recent years, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, The Rolling Stones and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have exemplified the talent serving up an 11-minute dose of music between game halves.

Only Prince’s 2007 performance raised eyebrows, with some calling the Purple One’s performance lewd and suggestive.

But what about next year? Who do you think should entertain the Super Bowl multitudes midway through next year’s game? Should the NFL stick with older acts, perhaps a Garth Brooks or Madonna? Or should the league skew towards a younger audience and book someone along the lines of Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Black Eyed Peas or Jonas Brothers?

And while we’re at it, what did you think of The Who’s Super Bowl performance?

It’s never too early to talk about next year’s Super Bowl halftime show. Just drop your comments, suggestions and observations in the comment thread below.

It would be terrible if they would pick Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers.  You honestly think football fans listen to them?  They should stick with the older acts because more people know them and favor them over newer acts.  I'd like to see Eric Clapton, Foo Fighters, or Bon Jovi do it over the next few years.

The game was in Miami, and he's part owner of the team: don't know why Jimmy Buffett wasn't picked to perform, he would have been perfect.

Next year's game is in Dallas, someone country will be picked.  My guess is Garth Brooks or George Strait.

Fleetwood Mac - They could perform "Tusk," "Rhiannon," "Go Your Own Way," and Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back."  I think that would be a great halftime show.

They are in the midst of a huge tour and they have a new Soundtrack for

Iron Man 2 coming up,so why not the awesome sounds of AC/DC. Or

since Super Bowl 45 is in Texas, why not those Texas rockers,ZZ Top.

I agree with eastcoastrocker, football fans don't listen to Disney teen groups. I think the best act they could get is KISS. You can't go wrong with them. They never put on a bad show.

I also agree with EastCoastRocker. Any person who thinks Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers would be a good fit for anything associated with the NFL is crazy. There's no way. Diversity is a big thing nowadays, but those are two things I don't think will ever completely transcend boundaries.

Garth Brooks is a good guess... or Keith Urban...

Angie, that's a good point, but a lot of people would have said the same thing about Justin Timberlake.  You never know what might happen in a few years.  I think the ZZ top idea was a good one.

Not sure they'll go country, but if they do it'll be George Strait. He's as big in Texas as Springsteen is in Jersey. If they go with classic rock again, my guess is either The Eagles or ZZ Top.
