To some, spring is the time to get out the Windex and Pine-Sol and start cleaning house. For Kaki King, it’s time to rock out. The singer/songwriter and guitarist plans to spend the next three months playing shows across both Europe and the U.S. in support of her upcoming album.
King’s European tour plans start March 7 with a gig at Manchester Academy in the U.K. and conclude April 11 at Nouveau Casino in Paris.
Additional dates include Parco della Musica Auditorium in Rome (March 13), L’Usine/PTR in Geneva (March 15), Ampere in Munich, Germany (March 21), Mono in Oslo, Norway (March 30) and Melkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands (April 9).
Four days after wrapping the Euro tour, King heads for the U.S., playing an April 15 show at Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, N.Y. Dates are on the books through a May 25 show at Glass House in Pomona, Calif.
Tour stops include Theatre Of The Living Arts in Philadelphia (April 28), 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville (May 2), The Waiting Room in Omaha, Neb. (May 9), Neumos in Seattle (May 14) and The Fillmore in San Francisco (May 21).
King’s fifth full-length studio album, Junior, is set for release April 13. Junior is the follow-up to 2008’s Dreaming of Revenge and was once again produced by Malcolm Burn (Patti Smith, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris).
Junior is described as an excellent example of “her further maturation as a well-rounded artist who defies categorization and expectations” with lyrics that range from “exuberance and anger to heartbreaking melancholy” and songs that take the listener from “experimental pieces to accessible pop.”
King notes that she has “never made records for other people. My evolution from record to record has been personal not commercial.”
The album features multi-instrumentalist Dan Brantigan and drummer Jordan Perlson.
“Prior to this I would have written a lot in the studio and played all the instruments myself,” King said. "This time, I really leaned on Dan and Jordan to help shape the songs and help me get the record written.”
After earning a Golden Globe nomination, along with Eddie Vedder and composer Michael Brook, for the score to 2007’s Into The Wild, King is currently writing scores for a number of projects.
