The Who: Super Bowl Swan Song?

02:01 PM, Monday 2/22/10 14 |   |

Fans of The Who in the stands at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium for the band’s Feb. 7 performance during Super Bowl XLIV may be luckier than they thought: The 12-minute set may have been the group’s final gig.

Frontman Pete Townshend, who has suffered for years from tinnitus and partial deafness, has revealed to Rolling Stone that his symptoms have reached a point where he and Roger Daltrey are seriously considering calling it quits.

“If my hearing is going to be a problem, we’re not delaying shows – we’re finished,” Townshend, 64, said. “ I can’t really see any way around the issue.”

Despite a rumored spring tour that was to include stops at Coachella and the New Orleans Jazz Festival, there’s only one confirmed date on The Who’s itinerary this year: a March 30 benefit for Daltrey’s Teenage Cancer Trust at London’s Royal Albert Hall featuring a performance of Quadrophenia in its entirety – and that might not happen.

The only hope still left for the band is a special in-ear monitor Townshend’s in the process of being fitted for by an audiologist recommended by Neil Young.

The guitarist explained that he’s waiting to see if his hearing gets any worse in the meantime and if not, he’ll test out the monitor at the benefit.

For his part, Daltrey has his fingers crossed, telling RS, “It’s a good test of Pete’s hearing. We won’t know until we try.”

Its about time then. His and Roger's vocals are shot and its gotten pretty embarrassing especially after the Ox croaked. They got pretty bad after Moon died and really they ceased to exist after Moonie self-destructed.

Although the Super Bowl show wasn't their best, I've seen them every tour since '82 and the last one sure was excellent.

Rattus, when did you last see them?  They remain a vital and energized live band, and Endless Wire proved they (Pete) can still write better material than just about anyone.

The who are still the greatest band on earth. Also there is no way that this is their last concert. You guys forgot about their Quadrophenia concert at the TCT.

RATTUSNORVEGICUS - I believe your being a bit rude & inconsiderate. They are legends, and hall of famers. They don't sound like they did when they were twenty-something, but they are still damn good. I wonder if you will even be able to walk around when your 64.

Roger , Pete, whatever you 2 decide, we will always love what you have dome for rock.

Re: Rattus comment:  Spoken like the true Norwegian Rat that you are.  Back to your midden!  If todays bands had half of the raw power that the Who have and had--you'd never have gotten your Brittany Spears collection from your sister...(no one would have heard of her.)

I'd like to see Roger and Pete scrap the stadium rock show and do a stripped down (almost) accoustic tour of their lesser-known, but still genius, material. Seems like Pete would be able to handle that ear-wise, and it might energize his creative side a little more than the standard set they've been doing for the past few decades

Ratt & others!  I'd rather see The Who @ 75% than all the crap out there today @ 100%! The Who are true legends.  I'll be seeing Roger w/Eric Clapton next month in Orlando.  Can't wait.  Get your hearing fixed Pete!  And please tour again!

I agree with Saneaux, I'd like to see The Who do a stripped down show of lesser know songs like However much I booze or Imagine a Man and the like from By Numbers or deep cuts from Who Are You and earlier stuff from A Quick One or even The Who Sellout in its entirety. That would be awesome!!

Hey,Philtey. You've been down in that killer fog too long.Britney Spears?Hehe. The name Rattus..I use is from an old punk band The Stranglers who opened for the Who many moons ago. No,I'm 45 years and extremely schooled.Just saw Al DiMeola a few days ago, you've never heard of him either, right? You radio people and your little education is hilarious.

When I'm 64?Will ya still need me,will ya still feed me,when I'm 64.Sorry guys,I have about 12 of their cds but I can take or leave this late stuff. You guys like paying a few hundred bucks to see them in this sellout age.Course many of you are cookie cutter classic rock radio fans and never got off your butts and found out all the other great music thats been.In this profanely ignorant society, many people have no concept of words like 'integrity'.Heck, you guys who never saw the Who with Keith Moon actually think your gonna get to see them live maybe if they don't fold.Sorry, you missed them and will never see them.Sorry..

Fail. Just more sensationalist rubbish. The Who are going to be twice as good as your favorite band on 30th Mar at Royal Albert Hall.

Half of The Who in their mid 60s can still kick the *** out of any live band working right now. I'll take a croaky Roger Daltrey and a sloppy Pete Townshend over bloated washouts like the Stones or U2 any day.

Does anyone really think Get Up Kids or My Morning Jacket (great bands they may be) are ever going to put on a live show as amazing as The Who even past their prime on a bum nite?
