Friday Fun: Love & The Concert Fan

09:01 AM, Friday 5/7/10 7 |   |

Is music important in a relationship? More specifically, is the love of a certain band or musical genre a necessary consideration when it comes to, well, love?

Earlier this week there were reports of a new dating site promising to hook up Apple fans. The idea behind the method is that people owning iPods, Macs iPhones and iPads are made for each other and only need a little online help to find true iLove.

So that got us to thinking about music fans. Specifically, whether people need to have compatible tastes in music before they can achieve compatibility in amour.

Of course, meeting people through music is common, and we’re sure you’ve heard more than your fair share of how couples first met at a concert, festival or even at a CD release party. But can true love exist between a Megadeth fan and, say, a Coldplay lover? Can a Britney Spears fan find his or her soul mate at a Nine Inch Nails show? Do goth and jazz mix? Country and death metal? Hip-hop and prog-rock?

And what about your own experiences? Has music resulted in true love, or for that matter, the dissolution of a relationship? Have you ever broken off a romance because you couldn’t stand the other person’s musical tastes? Artists sing about love all the time, but how important is music when it comes to true love? Just drop your musings in the comment thread below.

I refuse to consider a relationship of any kind with anybody who doesn't love the song "baby" by justin bieber and "every rose has it's thorn" by poison.

Contradictory musical tastes don't have to spell doom...but they don't really help matters, either. I dated a country fan for a while. I didn't listen to her country tunes, she didn't much groove on my Pet Shop Boys or Ministry. It made for some awkwardness.

Its Just a fact that Men not only enjoy music more than women, but we also have better taste. I am obsessed with Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, Depeche Mode, The Doors, ELO, Supertramp, my girlfriend likes Country.

I had to break up with a girlfriend because she didn't dig my Mano Negra cds.

My wife has learned to enjoy my musical tastes over the years and after more than 10 years together she's as enthusiastic about shows. This year she even made me buy tickets for Passion Pit, LCD Soundsystem and MGMT.

She went with me to SXSW for the first time but she had to spend a considerable time taking care of the kids, so for next year we're sending the kids to grandma while dad and mom are rocking out.

I have to agree unfortunately with faithnomore89.Lots of people make concessions for 'love' though.Women tend to get their ideas from vanity magazines like sheep and when they try to show their taste to the world its often rather lame and of course out to lunch. Most guys are in the same boat but certainly more guys actually give a dang about music than girls. They are more often the wayshowers of truth to their girlfriends than vice-versa certainly. But your little 'romance' special interest thing is lame like most news on yahoo or whatever. They try to play on peoples insecurities about romance when there are far more interesting things to read about.

My first wife was a dedicated Michael Jackson fan while I was more of a Paul McCartney follower back in the day.

I kept telling her Jackson didn't have half the talent McCartney possessed, but she wouldn't listen to me, and would go about singing "Billie Jean" all frackin' day long.

The marriage didn't last long. Thankfully, I filed for divorce before "The Girl Is Mine" came out.
