Friday Fun: The Bands You Left Behind

09:01 AM, Friday 5/21/10 11 |   |

Some bands and artists stay with you for life, helping you celebrate the good times and providing comfort when things go south. But it doesn’t always work out that way.

You might fall head over heels for a band only to find the relationship isn’t meant for the long haul. Maybe it was simply age and what sounded great when you were 18 didn’t appeal to you when you hit, say, 25 or 30.

Other times it might be a singular event like an artist going a new direction or espousing political views contrary to your own. Or maybe you just grew tired of the same old song and dance.

Which bands and artists did you leave behind? Did a guitarist quit your onetime favorite band without asking your permission? Did a group switch lead singers one time too many? Or was it a case of you not leaving the band so much as the band leaving you? It’s time to talk about your musical past loves in the comment thread below.

I completely agree with what FaithNoMore89 says about Aerosmith.  I'm grateful that I saw them twice on the Pump tour - that was their last great album/tour.

Extreme - I was such a massive fan in the late '80s/early '90s.  Their first two albums were amazing, third album was not so good and then they broke up.  Then they finally reunited which made me happy, but the last album was a huge disappointment.  That being said, I will still always believe that Nuno Bettencourt is one of the most brilliant guitar players ever to play the instrument.

    311...

Their first two albums (and their early albums before they were signed) were great stuff.  When the self-titled blue album came around it was still good stuff but you could tell it was coming to an end.  Nothing like the Grassroots album.

AC/DC & Ozzy - I used to have all the albums - probably still do - but I have grown so tired of listening to that stuff - plus Angus and Co. haven't put out anything good since For Those About to Rock and Ozzy has missed the boat since Ozzmosis and his live shows are so played - not to mention his reality show crap.

    Too many to mention...

R.E.M. has lately proved time and again that it was the end of the band as we know it once Bill Berry left in '96.

Radiohead lost me after OK Computer. They were trying so hard to be arty and exceptional that they forgot about making actual music.

U2 has been making half-assed albums for the last decade.

Smashing Pumpkins. I don't know what is sadder. Being a washed up alternative rocker or having everybody know this except you.

Blur was great until they forgot they were a British band, not a crappy American one (see 1997's "Blur" and every album afterward...)

Van Halen using Wolfgang. Was Woflie's bass even plugged in on that tour?

Definitely Aerosmith, an excellent band in the 70s, but one that has put out a lot of crap over the past 15 or 20 years.  The Stones, too, are band I left behind.  It's been a long sad, slide for them the past few decades.  U2 has disappointed in the last 15 years, too.  R.E.M. has had a couple mediocre recordings since Bill Berry left, though they got me back with 2008's Accelerate, a rocking return to form that gives me some hope for their future.  The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the best American bands of the '90s.  Now, I can't listen to them anymore.  Van Halen hasn't released a studio album for so long, I don't care about them, either.

Chicago- one of the first bands I bought.  Horns, hooks, skill.  Now they're barely a shadow of themselves, after selling out to Lite FM and replacing the rhythm section.

Metallica. Great band when they had something to say. Love everything from Kill em all to Load. The music has just sounded forced since then to me.
