What Would You Give Up For Cheaper Concert Tickets?

10:01 AM, Friday 8/27/10 34 |   |

Do you think concert tickets cost too much? What would you give up in exchange for lower prices?

Earlier this week Ticketmaster announced it would, whenever possible, post all-in prices up front, including all applicable fees and charges.

Meanwhile, Bob Dylan performed a one-off show at The Warfield in San Francisco where fans could only purchase tickets for $60 apiece on the day of the show. What’s more, only cash was accepted. No credit cards, checks or even ATM debit cards were accepted as payment for an evening with Bob.

Then there’s indie singer / songwriter Joe Pug who announced that ticket prices for his upcoming club tour will have a $10 ceiling.

But ticket prices aren’t just about additional service charges and additional fees. Tours also involve highly trained professionals, such as technicians, roadies, lighting experts and sound specialists. What’s more, mammoth audio/visual undertakings also require men and women skilled in set design, film, choreography, costuming and more. And their services don’t come cheap.

Let’s face it. In many instances when we plop down our hard-earned money for concert tickets we expect visual and sonic extravaganzas. Of course, that’s a given when you’re talking about a Britney or Madonna. But what about the bands and artists that don’t employ dancers or multiple costume changes yet still bring plenty of eye candy to the stage?

Yes, U2 fans, we’re looking at you. The current U2 tour, with its gigantic stage and special effects, costs a small fortune to produce. Would you sacrifice the visual for a cheaper ticket?

But this isn’t just about U2. Would you buy a ticket for KISS, Korn, or AC/DC sans lights, lasers and pyro? Would you be willing to settle for a little less flash if it meant a little more cash in your pocket? Just drop your comments in our rather low-tech discussion thread below.

YES!  Give me less bells and whistles anytime.  Ticket prices are out of control.  Worse is the FU charges that add up to an additional 30-50% of the ticket price.  I certainly don't begrudge paying the working man a living wage.  What I truly resent is an INconvenience charge on top of handling fee on top of surcharges, etc.  And WHY does it cost $10 just to mail out my tickets?  Last I checked, a stamp was less than $.50!!  How about the charge to print your own tickets?!  This is greed pure and simple -- not a matter of paying the roadies and light techs.

I'd GLADLY give up all the "convenience" charges to get cheaper concert tickets!

As long as they don't skimp on the audio I'm all for less flash. It's all about the music and frankly bands like Kiss only need it because they are less talented.

The bands I like (The Black Crowes, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, The Mother Hips, etc.) don't need a big, technical expensive show, they know how to create drama with the music, not the spectacle.  U2 were far better on their stripped down Elevation tour than they are now.  Bands should go back to focusing on delivering a good show with their music and stage presence, not lights and video and moving stuff.

But the main reason concert tickets are too expensive, IMO, is that Ticketmaster/LiveNation make too much money on their monopoly on the concert "industry".

I go to alot of shows. About 40 a year. I would give up my car and my blackberry for cheaper tickets and no charges. What ever happened to the days of $23.75 tickets for a great tour!  I love U2 and have seen the show, but I will say, I bought the $40 tickets and then stood in the seats that cost others $275.

I think a lot of fans would be willing to do without big elaborate sets if the ticket prices came down.  I know I sure would.  Most of us become fans of a band because of the music, not because of the stage design.  Though the ZooTV tour was great, U2 did well after their PopMart experiment fizzled, when they returned to smaller indoor venues and stripped down the gigantic stage.  Though they tried to go best of both worlds with their 360 Tour, most of the good seats are still priced out of reach for the casual fan.  Plus, the monstrous Claw set they use now takes upwards of 3 days just to disassemble.  It costs millions to transport, build, tear down that set, and all that cost gets put into the ticket prices.  Touring acts: smaller can be better, and the fans will thank you for it when they don't have to pay as much.

Absolutely nothing. We should not be expecting less, as Gene Simmons would say, we should be expecting more.

U2 is not the problem. I have GA's  to their show for about $60. Now let's talk about the Eagles. Henley is one of the biggest hypocrites around. The Eagles stage show is absolutely nothing special and yet they charge as much or more than anyone else out there. Springsteen and U2 dwarf the Eagles but you can get tickets up close for about 25% of an Eagles show. Heck those guys have released one new collection of material in about twenty years.  It's not lights, smoke and mirrors, it's greed. Of course who did the Eagles learn from? Why could it have been Irving Azoff? Can you say Live Nation, Ticketmaster....

Ticket prices are WAYYY out of control.  30 years ago you might pay $10 to see a major band, now you pay more than 10 times that.  Don't tell me the cost of doing a tour has gone up exponentially.  At least a band like KISS, who some claim talentless, are giving the fans a fairly cheap ticket at $30 and less for lawn this summer along with the added benefit of bringing children free to the show with a paid adult. That band is STILL a bargain.

Fans shouldn't have to give up anything for a reasonably priced ticket. If bands want people to show up, they're the ones who should be cutting back. They also need to start standing up to TicketBastard as well.
