No need to hunt down a Carpenters tribute when the definitive version of "Groupie (Superstar)" was done by the real deal, but thanks for the heads up, NYGTO. I'm sure Sonic Youth fans would benefit from delving into the songbooks of both the Carpenters and the Bramletts, outside of the prism of the '80s or a cover by Sonic Youth, with due respect to them.

"Delaney and Bonnie's "friends" of the band's 1969-70 heyday also had considerable impact. After the early 1970 breakup of this version of the band, many of its ex-members were recruited by Leon Russell to join Joe Cocker's band, participating on Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen recording sessions and North American tour (March-May 1970; Rita Coolidge's version of "Groupie (Superstar)" was recorded with this band while on tour). Following this, these same musicians, joined by Eric Clapton and Dave Mason, also comprised the core backing band on George Harrison's vocal debut album All Things Must Pass (1970). Clapton subsequently recorded his landmark album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970) with this band's bassist Carl Radle, singer/keyboardist Bobby Whitlock and drummer Jim Gordon, as Derek and the Dominos."

Delaney (and Bonnie) were and remain much loved fixtures in the Los Angeles music scene -- so many are so unaware of the wide and deep community of L.A.-based artists, writers and others who never became "famous" or trendy but without whom some of the greatest American pop and rock music would not exist. He will be deeply missed.

This is also a loss. Delaney wrote some great songs.

Someone might want to point out to this AP writer that the "recent" cover of "Superstar" by Sonic Youth is nearly fifteen years old and comes from a brilliant Carpenters tribute album called "If I Were A Carpenter." Worth hunting down.

i'm sad to here of this very soulful gentleman.i've been listening to a few delaney and bonnie and friends shows, and they just wail!,he had a ton of friends, and that's the wealth in life.the whole picture, the playing,singing,arraingments,songs, they had it all,good time time funky,soulful rockin' music, he will be missed.he is the ike turner of the 60's-70's. a musical genius for all the aformentioned reasons! god bless you delaney and all the happiness you gave while you were here spending time with us,and will bring to your friends who left before you! i can't help but think of I'm Comin' Home.....peace brother,say hi to Duane..
