Melanie Martinez is a cry baby and proud of it. The young singer/songwriter channeled the childhood teasing she endured into an alter ego and songs that landed her a deal with Atlantic Records after competing on season three of “The Voice.”

Her debut full-length, Cry Baby, dropped in 2015 and showcased her blend of indie pop and hip hop. But she is also a visual artist. “There is not a single element of any piece of art, photograph, picture, video, stage show [or] sound that she hasn’t intimately been a part of,” manager Ron Shapiro told Pollstar.

Shapiro met Martinez through a business acquaintance. He then brought her to the attention of ICM agent Craig Bruck. “Her creativity and her artistic vision [are] just super powerful,” Bruck said. “She’s a very compelling artist who’s built a really big audience without a hit song on the radio.”

The video for “Alphabet Boy,” one of the tracks from her album, hit 1 million views in eight hours and has soared to more than 26 million. “Dollhouse” is another that has skyrocketed to more than 65 million views.

“From the second she walked into my office and sang one song I knew she was destined for some kind of stardom,” Shapiro said. “She just screamed artist and one that was meant to have an impact.”

Martinez is currently in the midst of a world tour with shows booked through fall. “She’s going to play some of the biggest venues to date of her career,” Shapiro said. “She’s effectively sold out almost every show she’s played since those first 100-person clubs that we booked three to four years ago.”

Future plans for Martinez include the follow-up album to Cry Baby, which continues and evolves the story of her character.

“I’ve never, ever come across an artist whose innate capability and sense is [as] comprehensive and guided and powerful as Melanie Martinez,” Shapiro said. “[It was] a miracle moment five years ago when I said yes to meeting somebody’s cousin.”
