Scheduled To Appear - 10/15

04:04 PM Wednesday 10/15/08 | |

Normally on Wednesdays we highlight the comedians on the schedule for the rest of the week. Today however we want to note the passing of a songwriter who left a big mark on the television landscape.

"Na-na na-na na-na na-na Batman!"

It's a safe bet that most of the world could identify the theme song from the campy '60s show with just the first eight notes.

Or how about this one? "Da-dum da-dum da-dum, dum da-da dum da-daaa dum"

Again, it probably wouldn't take more than the first six or seven notes for most people to recognize the theme from the movie and TV versions of Neil Simon's "Odd Couple."

Neil Hefti, the composer of both songs, died last weekend.

Hefti, 85, was a prolific songwriter, who scored dozens of movies and television shows and composed and arranged tunes for Woody Herman and Count Basie.

But to generations of TV viewers, he'll always be the guy who wrote that kick-ass "Batman" theme song, for which he won his only Grammy.
