Ottmar Liebert has made a name for himself as not only one of the most popular flamenco guitarists, but a consummate touring artist as well. Along with his Luna Negra band, Liebert is continuing in that tradition of tireless touring with the addition of autumn dates.
Dates have the ensemble on the road around the States through the end of October, with two-night stands in New York City and Annapolis.
At one point during his 13-year-career, Liebert had with him on stage three other guitarists, three drummers/percussionists, a bassist, and a horn section.
This time around it looks to be on the smaller side, with longtime bassist Jon Gagan doing what he does best, along with some key work; Ron Wagner tackling percussion; and Canton Becker in a slightly unconventional role for Luna Negra - DJ.
Leibert's latest offering, Nouveaumatic, is expected to be released in September, but only through his Web site at lunanegra.com. The disc is along the same lines of his remix collection, Euphoria (1995), and features DJ remixes of his songs, incorporating world beats and ambient sounds.
Until Nouveaumatic goes up for grabs, music-hungry fans can satiate their appetite with some free, mostly bootleg downloads on the site.
Liebert is raffling off the guitar he used to record his hit debut album, Nouveau Flamenco. The guitar, made by Burguet in Spain, is a classical model with a spruce top. Raffle tickets are $10, with 100 percent of the money being donated to the purchaser's choice of The International Red Cross or Amnesty International charities.
