The fourth edition of the tour honoring the genius of Jimi Hendrix launches March 5 in Los Angeles and features so many guitarists, you might need a program to stay on top of all the performances.
At the core of the 2010 Experience Hendrix tour you’ll find Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brad Whitford, Ernie Isley, Living Colour and Double Trouble’s Chris Layton on all dates, as well as Doyle Bramhill II appearing on most engagements.
Also appearing on several dates will be Sacred Steel featuring Robert Randolph and Susan Tedeschi along with Los Lobos members David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas.
And who has the appropriate beat to play bass for all these guitar virtuosos? That would be Billy Cox, the tour’s direct connection to Hendrix, a veteran of the Jimi Hendrix Experience as well as Band of Gypsys.
“It’s a thrill for me to play Jimi’s music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s,” Cox said. “The Experience Hendrix Tours have shown how timeless this music really is.”
Like past Experience tours, the game plan calls for various combinations of guitarists playing Hendrix’s music, including signature numbers like “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Red House” and “Purple Haze.”
But before you start wondering if this is just an attempt to rip off Hendrix’s legacy, we should mention the tour is presented by Experience Hendrix, LLC, the company founded by the legendary guitarist’s father and owned by members of the Hendrix family.
The tour begins March 5 in Los Angeles at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk. It continues at The Joint in Las Vegas March 6 and the Ikeda Theatre in Mesa, Ariz., March 7.
Other stops include Friant (Fresno), Calif. (March 9), San Francisco (March 10), Denver (March 14), Kansas City (March 16), Minneapolis (March 17), Chicago (March 18), Milwaukee (March 21) and Red Bank, N.J. (March 25). The last show on the itinerary is March 27 in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre.
Artist lineups may differ on some nights and you should check out the individual dates to see which performance you want to attend. Tickets are now on sale. For more information, please click here for the Experience Hendrix Tour Web site.
