Free Concerts Cut

03:01 PM Friday 7/30/10 |   |

Free concerts can’t make ends meet without an audience, so the promoter of a complimentary series recently scrapped his last three shows in Syracuse, N.Y., citing low attendance.

Wednesdays on the Water consisted of weekly summer concerts at the city’s Great Lawn at the Inner Harbor. While the series opener with Great White drew roughly 7,000, promoter Marc Albert told the local Post-Standard attendance and concession revenues fizzled for later shows.

“The attendance was terrible,” Albert said. “The series [budget] was based on attendance and [subsequent] concession figures. The last few weeks, it hasn’t been there. I can only go so deep out of pocket … All I could see was a deeper loss.”

Albert said his company, Marc Albert Enterprises, had settled up with the bands and crews for the events so far, but suffered a loss “over six figures.”

Performances were canceled featuring former Foreigner singer Lou Gramm and the local Todd Hobin Band.

Albert told the Post-Standard he wondered whether the economy was involved in the flop, but he also questioned whether he picked the wrong lineup for the city.

“I was trying to do the right thing by doing free events with a great venue and great atmosphere,” he said. “Obviously, I picked something wrong. What I thought was a promising venture, the attendance and concessions really didn’t pan out.”

Your getting a free show in a great venue and your complaining about paying too much for water. Sounds a little ungrateful, they dont deserve you Mr. Albert move to my town... Syracuse sounds like a lam a%$ town to me...........

that attendance figure is correct......awesome location.....great promotion - being free......but this year - $3.50 for water??? come on.....

the acts that are being cancelled this year WOULD have drawn huge crowds, but the concession prices are too high..

There was a least 7000 there and I was front stage center!!! Supporting my favorite band!!! Great White has a awesome fan base. You must have your head in the sand! Too bad Syracuse let this slip through their fingers by not supporting it. All the bands were excellent choices. I think Wednesday nights is what fizzled. People work during the week.!!!

Can somebody who went to the Great White show confirm the attendance - 7,000?  I doubt if they could pull 7,000 for an entire US tour.

What the promoted does not seem to understand is that he is competing against Ithica and Turning Stone Casino, which get higher quality acts.  He is also choosing acts that do not attract as wide an audience as he might be.  I can think of many artists that he could book that would appeal to more people of varied ages and he might get a larger turnout.
