Lennon B-Day Tribute Set

11:01 AM Tuesday 9/14/10 |   |

Although it falls more than a month after John Lennon’s 70th birthday, an all-star tribute concert honoring the late artist is set for November in New York City.

Presented by the group Theatre Within, the concert takes place Nov. 12 at New York’s Beacon Theatre and will include performances by Jackson Browne, Alejandro Escovedo, The Kennedys, Cyndi Lauper, Shelby Lynne, Taj Mahal, Vusi Mahlasela, Aimee Mann, Keb’ Mo’, Meshell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, Rich Pagano, Martin Sexton, Patti Smith with Chris Bliss, Wendy Osserman Dance, Joe Raiola and the Playing For Change band.

Born October 9, 1940, the former Beatle was shot and killed by deranged fan Mark David Chapman Dec. 8, 1980 only two months after his 40th birthday. Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life. As with all his attempts for parole, his latest bid for freedom was denied earlier this month.

Tickets go on sale Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. New York time. Proceeds will go to the Playing For Change Foundation, which works to provide resources, including facilities, supplies and educational materials, to musicians and their communities around the world.
