After The Allmans

10:01 AM Thursday 3/10/11 | |

The Allman Brothers Band begins its annual New York City residency this week.  But the music doesn’t stop after the final encores. Not if you head on over to the Iridium Jazz Club for its series of weekend Allman Brothers midnight aftershows.

Beginning Friday The Iridium has lined up several impressive late-night weekend events guaranteed to keep the vibe going after the band leave the Beacon Theatre's stage, including Devon Allman’s Honeytribe March 11; The Yonrico Scott Band featuring Allmans bassist Oteil Burbridge and his brother Kofi March 12; The Funk Summit featuring The Meters’ Leo Nocentelli plus Bernie Worrell and Fred Wesley March 18; Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band featuring Allman Brothers drummer Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson March 19; Col. Bruce Hampton and Pharaoh Gummitt featuring Duane Trucks March 25 and the Hubert Sumlin Band March 26.

The Iridium will also feature a bit of rock history during the shows – Duane Allman’s 1957 Goldtop “Layla” Les Paul guitar. Described as the late, great axeman’s “primary instrument” on the first two Allman Brothers albums as well as on Derek & The Dominos’ Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs album, the guitar will be played by special surprise guests each evening. Plus, for a $20 donation, you can have a photo of your smilin’ mug snapped alongside the guitar on the Iridium’s stage. All proceeds will be split between the Les Paul Foundation and The Big House, home of the Allman Brothers Band Museum in Macon, Ga.
