Montreux Jazz Festival Announces Lineup

04:31 PM Tuesday 4/12/11 | |

Thanks to Internet leaks, Montreux Jazz Festival has announced it’s 2011 lineup a couple of days early. This year’s mega-long list of acts making the trek to Switzerland includes Santana, Ricky Martin, Sting, Paul Simon and Deep Purple.

That Deep Purple is playing Montreux Jazz is especially noteworthy when you consider the band’s “Smoke On The Water” described a real-life blaze at the Montreux Casino, and the song’s line about “Funky Claude” was a reference to festival founder Claude Nobs. Performing with a symphony orchestra, Deep Purple plays Montreux Jazz July 16.

Other dates to remember include Ricky Martin performing July 6; Sting bringing his “Symphonicity” tour July 11; Seal July 12 and Paul Simon July 14.

There are also those Montreux collaborations to look forward to, such as the tribute to Miles Davis featuring Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sean Jones and Sean Rickman. Or the Carlos Santana/John McLaughlin gig set for July 1, a day before the band Santana performs July 2.

Other artists on the schedule include Arcade Fire, B.B. King, Larry Graham & Graham Central Station, Donavon Frankenreiter, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Raphael Saadiq, Jimmy Cliff, Femi Kuti and Liza Minnelli.

Montreux organizers had scheduled April 14 for announcing the lineup, but moved the initial announcement to today after discovering it had leaked onto the ‘Net.

From MontreuxJazz.com:

“We are flattered that this information catches so much attention and gives rise to many rumors, though we would obviously have preferred that the program was announced as scheduled on April 14, 2011.”
