Surf’s Up For 2011 Bro-Am

05:01 PM Friday 5/13/11 | |

The date’s been set for Switchfoot’s seventh annual Bro-Am charity surf contest/beach concert.

This year’s Bro-Am takes place Saturday, June 18 at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Calif.

The event was dreamed up to give back to the San Diego community and benefit local children’s charities. Proceeds from the 2011 Bro-Am weekend events will go towards the San Diego and Oceanside chapters of StandUp For Kids, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to help improve the lives of homeless and street kids.

“The Bro-Am has been my favorite day of the year ever since we started it back in ’05,” Switchfoot singer Jon Foreman said in a statement. “To see our hometown come together to help out a deserving group of kids is an incredible experience. The StandUp Kids are true survivors, unsung heroes who have endured so much. The Bro-Am is our chance to celebrate their journey: a day at the beach with friends, surfing and a little rock and roll. Last year was our biggest year ever, and we hope to top it again this year.”

The surf contest and beach concert are both free events. The surf contest will be held June 18 from 7 a.m. through 3:30 p.m., along with a concert scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lineup for the concert will be announced soon.

Four-person teams secure their spot in the surf contest by donating to StandUp For Kids. Youth teams can also earn a spot in the contest by collecting clothing donations. The teams will include riders representing Hurley, Billabong, Surfer Magazine, Transworld Surf, Surf Ride, Jetpilot, AKA and Sharper Studios Surfboards along with members of Switchfoot.

Additional Bro-Am events include a June 16 auction night soiree and a June 18 after-party hosted by Switchfoot.

The auction takes place at a private residence with tickets available through Switchfoot’s website. The after-party will be held at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, Calif., with tickets sold through the venue. Tickets go on sale next week.

Over the past six years Bro-Am has raised more than $400,000 for San Diego-based charities. Last year’s event brought in 7,500 attendees and more than $135,000 for the local chapters of StandUp For Kids.
