A North Carolina TV station reports photos depicting Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee and Poison’s Bret Michaels posing with police officers while holding firearms has resulted in a federal investigation.

WSOC-TV reports the two rockers whose bands are currently touring together, were photographed with law enforcement officers while at the Rowan County Peace Officers Association’s shooting range.

Why the fuss? Apparently the area’s top cops weren’t aware that their officers might have fired off a few rounds with the musicians. The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, plus chiefs of police in Salisbury and Spencer, told the TV station they have launched their own investigations into the incident. While cops mixing with rock stars is hardly illegal, bringing the musicians to a police shooting range may not be approved by the departments’ rules & regs.

What’s more, WSOC reports Sheriff Kevin Auten said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is looking into the matter to see if either musician’s past run-ins with the law might prohibit them from being around firearms.

Yes, Tommy Lee, they’re probably looking at you. The Mötley Crüe drummer has had his share of legal woes, including serving four months in prison for kicking Pamela Anderson while she was holding their child. Other run-ins with the law include a 1999 arrest for allegedly inciting a 2007 riot when Mötley Crüe played the Greensboro Coliseum and Lee, along with the band’s Nikki Sixx, reportedly poured beer on a security guard.

Click here for the WSOC report which includes a nifty slideshow depicting Lee and Michaels with their law-enforcement buddies.
