The lawsuit stems from comments Noel made to the press about his brother and Oasis’ breakup.
The Britpop band, which was formed in Manchester, United Kingdom in 1991, split in 2009. After a backstage argument between the brothers, Liam quit Oasis, subsequently breaking up the band, minutes before an appearance at Paris’ Rock En Seine Festival.
In a statement about the lawsuit, Liam denied a comment Noel recently made saying that the singer canceled Oasis’ spot at the 2009 V Festival because he was hungover. Liam said that he couldn’t make the show because he had laryngitis.
The statement noted that despite what Noel says, Oasis’ break up had nothing to do with Liam’s clothing line Pretty Green.
“I am used to being called all sort of things by Noel and I have in the past said things about him, but what Noel has alleged this time went way beyond rock-and-roll banter and questioned my professionalism,” Liam said in a statement about the lawsuit. “I tried to resolve this amicably but have been left with no choice but legal action. All I want is an apology.”
On Monday Noel posted a webchat on his Facebook page in which he addressed the canceled V Festival show.
“For the record, it is a fact that he was diagnosed with laryngitis and it is a fact that he had a doctor’s note to prove it,” Noel said, according to the UK’s Guardian.
“If he gets offended by my opinions on such things then, you know, I apologize,” he said. “But it’s all getting very silly and a little bit out of hand and it’s not very cool. But there you go.”
British tabloid newspaper The Sun is one publication that is ecstatic about the news, writing, “just as the peacekeeping envoy from the UN was being briefed by the Home Office, peace has suddenly broken out in Burnage, Manchester.” The paper claims that Liam thought Noel’s apology was sufficient and that the singer has dropped the High Court writ against his brother.
“That was enough for Liam and the word was sent to his legal firm to get in touch with Noel’s lawyers to put an end to the whole ugly mess,” The Sun reports.
