Spend A Winter Week Playing Guitar

01:01 PM Friday 9/23/11 | |

Forget saving up for Christmas or Hanukkah. Guitarists will instead want to set aside money for the first annual Skolnick & Broderick’s Winter Guitar Retreat featuring Testament’s Alex Skolnick and Chris Broderick of Megadeth.

The retreat, which is the first winter installment of the Music Masters Camp Series, takes place Dec. 26-30 in the Catskill Mountains at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, N.Y. The Music Master Camp Series has previously been hosted by Dweezil Zappa, Todd Rundgren, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto.

In addition to playing lead guitar for Testament, Skolnick puts his degree from The New School’s jazz program to good use with the Alex Skolnick Trio. The group’s latest album, Veritas, reached the Top 10 on iTunes’ jazz chart. He has also performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Broderick has played lead and rhythm guitar for Megadeth for nearly four years after previously performing with Jag Panzer and touring with Nevermore. The guitarist, who has a degree in Classical Guitar Music Performance from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, has taught guitar lessons for the past 16 years and performed in many master classes.

Guitarists of all talent levels are invited to attend the Winter Guitar Retreat, which will include master classes with Broderick and Skolnick, jam sessions, open mic nights and optional private lessons.

Skolnick will give pointers on improvisation and Broderick will teach classical finger-style technique. The retreat will also cover lead guitar, rhythm guitar, jazz theory, chord theory, harmony, counterpoint, composition, chord voicings and heavy metal guitar. Bassist Nathan Peck and drummer/percussionist Matt “Zebar” Zebroski of the Alex Skolnick Trio will be there to provide rhythm accompaniment.

“I’m really looking forward to partnering with my friend Chris Broderick for our Winter Guitar Retreat,” Skolnick said in a statement. “Each of us has a unique, individual approach to guitar and it’s always fun to share one’s experiences with deserving students. Therefore, we’ve decided to join forces and create the ultimate post-Christmas, pre-New Year’s getaway for amateur and pro guitarists alike.”

Along with workshops, seminars and performances, the all-inclusive retreat package includes lodging and gourmet meals. Fans can choose between accommodations at the Full Moon Resort or the nearby Alpine Inn. Resort packages are priced between $1,950 and $2,530.

A 10 percent discount is available for fans who pay in full by Oct. 31.
