Widespread Panic Fan Falls From Balcony

02:21 PM Monday 10/31/11 | |

A Widespread Panic fan is in critical condition after falling off a first floor balcony during Saturday’s show at the Chicago Theatre.

The 26-year-old man hit his head after falling 15 feet over a banister to the venue’s marble floor, according to the Chicago Tribune. The accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m.

A spokesman for the Fire Department said the fan was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Police believe the fan was intoxicated and that the incident was an accident, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Days before the incident occurred Widespread Panic’s bus driver suffered a heart attack on Interstate 35 while traveling to the band’s Oct. 27 show in Ames, Iowa. Tom Torrisi passed away at the wheel of the bus.

Merchandise manager Rachel Kellenberger got in the driver’s seat and pulled the bus over to a stop in the highway median, according to a statement on Widespread Panic’s website. One crew member, Eric Bice, was thrown from his bunk and later treated for head injuries. No other passengers were injured during the accident.

The band’s statement described Torrisi as “family, a good soul, funny hearted and well respected.”

Dranny5000 - I can't tell you how glad I was to find your update. We were waiking down the stairs at the Chiaco Theatre after the show on Saturday (flew in from  Denver for the shows) and felt him fall (my husband felt him brush his arm as he fell) right by us and heard him land on the marble floor ... People we screaming and we were in shock. We ran to the security guard (who rolled his eyes at me and didn't really want to believe that it happened and I screamed at him to MOVE because someone had really hurt themselves) and then we called 911, as I'm sure many people did. When I looked over the side and saw him below I couldn't wrap my head around how far he fell, or the fact that it even happened. Stayed up 1/2 the night looking for updates on media web sites and saw that he was in critical condition, which we were grateful to hear b/c truly, when you see how far he fell you KNOW it's a miracle he lived. They were also reporting he fell 15 feet, which is WRONG, at least 40 feet I'd say ...

Anyway, thank you for the update. I've emailed it to everyone we were with because we all were very shaken up. I said a prayer outside that theatre that night and I'm just so grateful to hear that it sounds like he's going to be okay. Take care and please pass along our well wishes to him and his fiance and may they live long, happy lives together!

Hey Evster, way to be compassionate, ***.  He is a good friend of mine who was seriously injured and could have died.  For everyone who is concerned about what happened, it does seem to look like he's going to be OK.  This is a message from his girl that she asked me to post to those out there who would like to have an update on how he's doing:
