Taking The ZIP Out Of Scalpers

11:01 AM Monday 1/16/12 |   |

There’s more than one way to thwart a scalper, and artists and venues have tried everything from will-call-only shows, to voiding ducats found on secondary sites, to paperless ticketing in efforts to get real fans in the building.

Now, one arena in Tupelo, Miss., has come up with a new solution to scalping – by limiting sales of tickets to ZIP codes within a predetermined area.

BancorpSouth Arena is testing out the policy beginning with an Eric Church concert in April.

In analyzing sales data, officials from the venue apparently found that most purchasers come from North Mississippi, Alabama or Tennessee. But for every onsale, there’s usually a number of tickets sold in other states – sometimes as far away as California. So instead of voiding tickets sold out of the area after the fact, the venue will do it up front.

A notice on the Ticketmaster page for the upcoming Eric Church concert at the venue notes the location of the arena.

“Sales to this event will be restricted to residents of Mid-South and Southeast area,” the note states. “Residency will be based on credit card billing address. Orders by residents outside the Mid-South and Southeast area will be canceled without notice and refunds given.”

BancorpSouth Director Todd Hunt told the local Daily Journal the policy isn’t perfect, but should edge out some scalper sales and give true fans a chance at face-value tickets.

“We realize that may cut into a grandma who lives in Utah who wants to buy a ticket for her grandson as a gift,” Hunt said. “It makes it harder to buy tickets as a gift. It’s not a perfect solution, but grandma may have to mail a check to mom to buy the tickets.”

I am all for dealing with the scalping issue, but, I DO NOT like the idea of restricting sales to allow only people that live in the "right" area to buy tickets.  THIS grandma  and her friends like to ROAD TRIP to concerts and we are from all over the US and Canada. I really feel that this restriction will hurt the venues in the long run but reducing the number of legitimate tickets sold.

Trying to keep your loyal public from being fleeced by the ticket scalper is a never ending job.  Good luck to you in those efforts.  Scalpers taking advantage of anyone is not good for the concert or live entertainment industry.

They should be expanding their geographic area to Asia and Australia. I was in Tupleo for a Reba concert - they are lucky if there are 10,000 people in the county .I hail Krantz99 s comment - this Box Office manager is a complete idiot that needs to be fired and get a job at Regal Cinema.

what happens if i dont have a zip code ...  i live in southern ontario and travel to the detroit area to see shows (clsoer then toronto) if it goes by zip i wouldnt be able to see shows ...  and i imagine this would effect LOTS of people even though they are an hour or less from the venue ...

This is a stupid idea by people who while well-intentioned don't know their buying public.  I live in Northern California and attend up to 100 concerts a year.  I also buy tickets for my sister and brother-in-law who live in Southern California.    If I am a fan of a particular act, I may fly to another city (or state) to see them.   For instance, Guns N' Roses did not play in Northern California so I flew to Los Angeles to see them recently.  Limiting tickets to Zip Code would not stop scalpers since most scalpers (ticket brokers) are from the area where the show is held.  WILL CALL only pick-up (not allowing transferring title - name changes on the order) is the best way to stop this.  The scalper at least then would have to be at the venue to meet the buyer.   Surprised that a ticketing company wants to limit sales and protect concert-goers since tickets are non-refundable for the most part and scalpers buying them only helps their ticket sales.   Ticketing companies if they cared about the fans would limit their fees on ticket sales.

Its pretty easy to fight scalping in Tupelo. Its called being Tupelo. Another idiotic 2 bit box office manager with a solution to a non problem.

Don't think there is a huge scalping problem in Mississippi.

Let us not forget artist like Katy Perry scalp their own tickets. Roger Waters and many other anti-scalper artists see no double standards in using Ticketmaster Platinum seats or VIP packages.

Bc I travel all over the country for shows... I have nothing against.driving 12 &ours for a concert, but not being able to buy tickets I'm not reselling for profit bc I'm not in the venues state or a bordering state is bull@#%&...

These guys are dumber than a box of rocks. There are so many ways around this it is not even funny. Price is dicatated by supply and demand. We are talking about Mississippi here. What about the fan that has more important things to do at 10 am when they go on sale. He is now shut out if this actually worked ( which it does not)
