Street Audiences Are Great Focus Groups

11:01 AM Thursday 2/2/12 |   |

Thinking of playing your music on a busy street corner? Singer/songwriter Andy Grammer has some tips for you.

Come on, admit it. Haven’t you ever thought of tossing the job and/or school aside to pursue an exciting career entertaining street crowds?

Grammer, whose debut single, “Keep Your Head Up,” was recently certified gold, is tweeting his top ten tips for busking, offering up advice about picking the best spot, selling CDs and how long is too long.

“#7 – Shorter sets. 15 minutes and stop to sell CDs/clear crowed. 2 hour sets aren’t needed. Play your best 4-5 songs.”

As to finding the best place to play, Grammer’s message reminds us that the early bird still triumphs when hunting that worm.

“9 – Get there early. The best spots go fast. U might have to hold a spot for up to 4 hrs. It’s usually 1st come 1st serve.”

Grammer, who began his career busking in the streets, also shows his business side by offering a tip about audiences.

“#10 – Its not them its u:) Listen to what crowds tell u. If CDs aren’t selling switch up ur show. Its a great focus group!”

But above all, keep your dignity.

“#8 – Dont beg. U will make more in the end creating demand based on quality. Begging sucks the magic out of the experience.#streetperformingtips.”

Currently on tour, Grammer plays Cincinnati’s 20th Century Theatre tonight; Chicago’s Lincoln Hall tomorrow and Cortland, N.Y., Saturday night at SUNY / Cortland. For more busking tips, click here for Grammer’s Twitter feed.

Hell yeah, we'd all love to be singing on hip, sunshine clad California streets with professional set up, glamorous extra's and videographer supported by our Grammy winning dad!
