One Direction – The Next Really Big Teen Band?

02:01 PM Monday 3/12/12 | |

Irish boy-band One Direction performed for the multitudes outside NBC’s “Today” studio at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City this morning, gathering plenty of cheers and screams from their mostly female teenage audience. Could this be the next big band in teendom?

Formed last year while individual members competed on the U.K.’s “X Factor” talent competition, as a group One Direction placed third. The lads soon signed with Syco Records and their first album – Up All Night – was released in November 2011.

Currently in the midst of a tour of the U.K. and Ireland, the demand for tickets has resulted in multiple nights in several cities, including four evenings at The O2 – London (April 1-2 & 4-5); three nights at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle (Feb. 8-10) and two nights at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena April 13-14.

But what do you think? Is One Direction the next big group for teens since *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys or New Kids On The Block? Already there are rumors circulating in the media that the group might do something with Justin Bieber and the word is that the 18-year-old Canadian superstar is already a One Direction fan.

However, maybe the boys’ biggest sign of fame is their gig on April 7 as musical guests on “Saturday Night Live.”
