Whassup With Watsky?

03:01 PM Thursday 5/10/12 |   |

Speed-rapper/slam-poet/emcee George Watsky will find out if YouTube hits will turn into ticket sales when he ventures out for his first headlining tour this summer.

A YouTube phenom, Watsky experienced viral fame in 2011 when his video “Pale Kid Raps Fast” racked up 55 million plays, earning him appearances on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Last Call With Carson Daily” while publications such as New York Times Magazine praised his talent.

Since then he’s signed with Morrow Management with the company’s head honcho, industry vet Kevin Morrow, overseeing Watsky’s first headlining journey.

Meanwhile, Watsky continues to stoke that YouTube furnace, and plans to continue posting new tracks.

But Watsky wasn’t a total unknown before his 2011 video went viral. He won the Brave New Voices National Poetry Slam in 2006, appeared on the final season of “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry” and appeared at more than 150 universities.

Watsky’s summer adventure, appropriately titled “Nothing Like The First Time,” launches in Phoenix at the Red Owl July 1 and wraps in Southern California at West Hollywood’s Troubadour July 31. Stops along the way include Austin at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q/Waller Creek Amph. July 3; Baltimore’s Ottobar July 9; Cambridge, Mass., at Middle East Downstairs July 12; Toronto’s Mod Club July 14; Seattle at The Crocodile July 26 and San Francisco at Slim’s July 29.

Dumbfounded and The Breezy Lovejoy Band support on most dates.

Tickets go on sale May 11. Visit GeorgeWatsky.com for more information.
