Virgin Mobile FreeFest Back For Fall

For fans of free – and who isn’t? -- the wait is over. There will be a fourth Virgin Mobile FreeFest at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.

Rather than during the heat of summer, the 2012 edition is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 6, and organizers expect a little different vibe this time with the site’s surrounding Symphony Woods decked out in fall colors.

“For years, Virgin Mobile FreeFest has grown to become one of the cornerstone memories of summer,” Virgin Mobile’s Ron Faris said. “And I’m proud to say that now more than ever, Virgin Mobile is steadfastly committed to our fans’ right to ‘free-dom,’ no matter what time of year.

“I just can’t wait to see what our Dance Forest looks like in all that fall foliage.”

As in years past, the free bash features two main stages and a Dance Forest. A lineup is yet to be announced but, in keeping with the fan-friendly tradition, there’s a Twitter contest for fans who want to take part in the festival’s lineup announcement video when the time comes.

Fans can follow Virgin Mobile Live (@virginmlive) on Twitter and take their best guesses as to which artists will make the final lineup cut, with winners also receiving VIP credentials to the always “free’ed out” festival.

For those looking for pointers, the FreeFest tends to be an eclectic affair, with artists last year ranging from EDM favorite Deadmau5 to punk poetess Patti Smith, while leaning toward indie and emerging artists.

“Booking a free show for 50,000 people is the best,” said I.M.P.’s Seth Hurwitz, who books Merriweather Post Pavilion and the annual FreeFest. “You get to simply pick who you think are the best acts and most interesting stories.”

Making another FreeFest return is the popular “Free I.P.” program, through which fans can score VIP packages, perks and access in exchange for a few hours of volunteerism with organizations working primarily with homeless youth. Details of the Free I.P. program will be announced in coming weeks.
