After getting a 911 call from a citizen at about 11:20 p.m. about a person lying in the road, Texas Department of Public Safety officers found an accident just outside of Tioga, Texas, and the naked country singer at the scene, according to the Herald Democrat. Travis lives in Tioga.
The Associated Press reports that a Pontiac Trans Am registered to Travis had driven off a road and struck several barricades in a construction zone.
Police were forced to obtain a search warrant to get a blood specimen from Travis after he refused to take sobriety tests. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and a charge of retaliation, according to Dallas Fort-Worth’s NBC 5. As you can see in his mug shot, Travis was arrested with a few cuts and bruises.
“Travis had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and several signs of intoxication,” according to a statement from the Grayson County Sheriff’s office. “While Travis was being transported [to jail], Travis made threats to shoot and kill the troopers working the case.”
The Herald Democrat notes that despite his threats, Travis didn’t have a gun at the scene.
After being booked into Grayson County Jail he was released on $21,500 bond Wednesday morning pending an appearance before a judge in Sherman, Texas, according to the AP.
And here’s another strange twist to the story. Dallas Fort-Worth’s NBC 5 reports that sources say Travis attempted to buy cigarettes from a convenience store – while naked – before the accident. The clerk called 911 after reportedly exchanging words with Travis. The singer left the store without making a purchase.
NBC 5 notes that driving while intoxicated is a Class B misdemeanor and that retaliation is a third-degree felony that can cost a person 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Travis was charged with public intoxication in February after he was found sitting in a vehicle in front of a church in Sanger, about 20 miles from Tioga. He later released a statement saying he was sorry “for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl.”
